BBV discussion at Mother's Day dinner
I don't remember who brought it up, how it came up.

Conversation between my 2 right brothers - 1 mentioned Time or Newsweek article.

Both said it was ridiculous to vote by computer with all the problems computers have. Neither one viewed it as an 'us vs them' issue; both seemed to view it matter-of-factly as a stupid idea.

I was surprised neither one claimed that it was a democratic party plot to steal the election.

My only comments were how come there's a paper record at ATM machines, made by some of same companies.

At the end one brother had a solution - go back to old days when only people with property could vote. I think at that point SIL from China asked why? He said so that people on welfare couldn't vote for people promising them they'd get more $$$.

So then (my second comment, I think) I said why not, people with property would vote no property taxes for themselves. Then one brother said SIL from China should take me with her when she visits China; implication that I'd feel 'at home' in a communist country.

So I suggested we not have any more political conversation - after someone not in immediate family asked how come we 3 had such different political views since we were raised in the same family and I made some comment that my brothers had been led astray.

Parents were always democrats; years ago mother said she didn't like it that FDR ran for president four times.

My dad read Paul Greenberg's column in the local paper a lot and really didn't like Clinton. Mother, like many older people and others, was very offended that Clinton did 'all that' in the US citizens' house.

This was a very mild, low key 'discussion'; I found my brothers' views that BBV was a bad idea interesting. The only (quite mild) dissension was the 'only property owners should vote' and the China comments.
