Make the case: Bush is a racist
Didn't he just say something about people of color being able to govern?

Do yo uhave any questionable quotes from W that might come off as racist?

1. If you want to start the discussion
You should be at least as informed as the people that you are asking the question of.

In otherwords, if you don't know, shouldn't you do some research before asking the question?

You know, so you don't look dumb?

i don't
Don't care about looking dumb. Just wanting some info here. Many people on this board already have Bush quotes and articles that relate in a book-marked state. I can save my research time by asking for any research from others who might have gone this path before me. You see?

2. That's not what he said
He said that some (like, um, me to be honest) have questioned whether Arabs are capable of having a democracy. He basically called those (like, um, me) who asked this "racists."

This is bullshit and George Will even called him on it.

(Though I will say this. W is a lot of things, but I don't think he's racist at all. I think we throw that slander around too much).

3. No, I think Bush offends people of all colors...
.... as long as they're not rich.

8. I don't care. George Will is with me on this one!
"What does such careless talk say about the mind of this administration? Note that the clearly implied antecedent of the pronoun "ours" is "Americans." So the president seemed to be saying that white is, and brown is not, the color of Americans' skin. He does not mean that. But that is the sort of swamp one wanders into when trying to deflect doubts about policy by caricaturing and discrediting the doubters." (http://www.startribune.com/stories/1519/4765172.html)

Will thinks Bush does not mean that. I don't think he really means it either. Of course he knows there are other races among the American citizenry. But the fact that he SAID this reveals a deeply ingrained racism borne of ignorance and self-centeredness.

Racism does not have to be outwardly negative or violent to be racism. I bet he "has a lot of black friends", too (Condi... well, not so much Colin anymore). But Bush here reveals that he has preconceived notions about people based on race, and that, by definition, is racism.

4. The most recent version of the statement was this:
"There's a lot of people in the world who don't believe that people whose skin color may not be the same as ours can be free and self-govern," Bush said.

"I reject that. I reject that strongly. I believe that people who practice the Muslim faith can self-govern. I believe that people whose skins aren't necessarily -- are a different color than white can self-govern."

(http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A57791-2004Apr30.html, emphasis mine)

He made a similar statement in his April Press Conference.

In the above, he outright says, speaking for America, that people "whose skin color may not be the same as ours", whose skins "are a different color than white"... can self-govern.

He is implicitly stating that all Americans are white, that if you are not white, you are not American. Worse, he doesn't even realize that that's what he's saying, so self-centered and ignorant as he is in his racial attitudes. What is that if not racist?

7. ahh yes
This is what I was looking for brotherjon. I remember seeing a clip of those statements on the tube the other day and I was thinking..."the way he just said that...sounds like he is the one who believes those things."
as in the way you put it....he sees Americans as whites.

Anybody else got related quotes?

6. He is trying to create a straw man
He is trying to say that "those who disagree" with Bush are racist, and because he is Bush, he does a very bad job of it.

10. I agree. But in doing such a bad job, he automatically frames what is ...
... really a "white vs. non-white" comparison as an "American vs. un-American" issue. His automatic reaction is to equate "American" with "white".

That reveals so much about his racial attitudes it's not funny.

11. And what he said is racist
Anyone that says that the Arab culture may not accept democracy was talking about cultural differences, not genetic ones.

So what Bush said WAS racist.

9. You have a right to ask the question
Edited on Tue May-11-04 11:25 AM by goclark
The unPresident is sometimes held up as welcoming to minorities because of Colin Powell, CondiLIEzza,Paige and a few others. Those appointments were purely political, they are all of like thinking and will do his bidding.

His close relationship with Sec. Rice is still in question. She is his mouth piece and that is for sure. She will defend him until the last dog dies. She does not seem to be able to change his mind about Affirmative Action, I wonder why?!

Most African Americans see those mentioned above as political good ole boys, not placed because of affirmative action. In fact, his non - support of Affirmative Action, in this day and time, speaks volumes.

His appearance in Atlanta on the birthday of MLK was a disgrace.
African Americans tried to protest his visit but they were not allowed within eye sight.

If you notice his photo ops, you will always see about 2 or 3 of color sprinkled close by to suggest that they like him. They are usually soldiers hand picked or employees hand picked.

When was the last time that he visited an African American church?
He refused to meet with the Black Caucus for a long time. I think he did agree to honor them with a brief meeting sometime last year I believe.

I could go on and on but in my mind, he is a sorry President for people of all colors. He is also, IMO, a racist.

Thanks again for raising the question. You had every right to do that and I have every right to answer.

12. I'd bet anything that after his first meetings with Condoleeza Rice...
... he made at least one comment to someone about how "articulate" she was.

No real evidence of his racism. Just a hunch.

Edited on Tue May-11-04 06:47 PM by candy331
of this nation which has always been racist and always will be whether you want to hear it or not and by the way some of my best friends are? This nation started with what it will end up with, racism. I'm sure no one remembers all the Native Americans/Indians that had to be slaughtered since they were nothing but red skin savages, non humans and especially since they were on the land that God had given to good ole white christian folk. Seems like the good ole white christian folk are still at it doesn't it? Too bad for us all.
