Have Lurking/Undercover Freepers and Dittoheads learned anything on DU?
Do you think they learn anything on DU or do you think they "Block-Out" any facts or evidence that their being played, their loyalty being used, and manipulated by The Bush Administration, like dogs that will do anything for treat?

4. I think they are pertty selective in what they look at.
They look for stories where we mock the death of Tillman, or call for the overthrow of Christianity, or suggest that President Bush approved of Berg's death. In their eyes, those are the stories that matter. The ones that confirm their opinion of us. They aren't looking for anything but that.

Anything else they ignore.

6. Well I'm a former "freeper" who lurks M
can't really say DU changed my outlook. I found out about it after I realized just how liberal I really was. I love this site though now. From time to time I read posts that make me think about things in a different way.

15. A lot of things really
First off forgive me if this seems like just a bunch of ramblings, my 2 small children have been sick and I'm running on about an hour of sleep.

I grew up in a military family was pretty much brainwashed into thinking that the US could do no wrong. Once I dropped out of college and moved to be with my future husband, reality woke me up. I worked a lot of low wage jobs while getting back into school, and saw how hard my co-workers worked. People who may not have made the best choices in life (though I have to say a lot of them probably didn't have choices), but worked their asses off and usually had small children who depended on them. A woman who had a high needs child and couldn't get him to the doctor because the only doctor she was allowed to see was many towns over and she had no car or decent public transportation.

My husband also was a big help. I use to get frustrated because he was so "liberal". He said one thing that really started to change my outlook on everything, about how laws should be made according to our rights and not morality.

After that I had my first child which moved me even more left. I saw how incredibly difficult it was raising him even with a great husband with a decent job, and a huge supportive extended family. I couldn't imagine what others did without everything I have. How I didn't want my child to be punished because his parents couldn't afford a private education. How if, God forbid, something happened to my husband, my children shouldn't be punished because their mother couldn't afford health insurance.

The more I saw what Bush was doing (and Jeb too, I'm in Florida) the harder I analyzed my stance on things. I stopped being lazy and started looking at how my representatives voted, what bills were being passed and how they would effect not only me, but everyone.

That being said, last August I was still one of those "no matter who I vote for nothing will change, at least with the Republicans our family gets a few extra dollars back", but then I heard Howard Dean speak. I watched the debates to see what he had to say and found myself falling in love with Kucinich. So I guess one could say Kucinich pulled me to the other side. lol

I have always been liberal, but the last few years I have become very cynical (I wonder why). Last summer I had a chance to hear Kucinch speak in person and he made me believe again.

Welcome to DU..

I always look at it this way.. We are all citizens of the US AND the world.. What happens on the other side of the globe DOES affect us....9/11 brought that home ...in spades.. I , personally did nothing to "cause" it, but those who act on my behalf, did.. The fact that our media and our educational system does such a shitty job at informing us, explains part of it, but not ALL of it.. We MUST know what they are doing, and WHY, or we will be in the crosshairs ...FOREVER..

I have lived abroad, and most people do not see us as this benign "uncle" who just helps everyone..

On the homefront side, as citizens of this country, we ALL have a stake in what this country is, and has to offer.. Why should the super-rich have the "biggest slice of Mom's Apple Pie", just because the won the gene-pool lottery?.. Are they really more deserving that the single Mom whose husband died or left her? Is she a "bad person" who must grovel and "take personal responsibility"? Is America not HER country too?? Why should someone make in a hour, what most people will never make in their entire life??

The inequity is staggering, and there is no reason for it.. A country's real measure is how they treat their poor ...We don't measure up very well..

The right loves to agonize about holding onto "what's theirs", and rails about the "division of assets", but most of the really rich in oour country could "lose" 3/4 of what they have, and still live in great wealth..

It's greed and power....That's all it is !

21. ahh you wrote it so much better than I did
Edited on Wed May-12-04 01:53 PM by recoveringrepublican
which is part of the reason I only lurk here, I have so many thoughts in my head it's hard for me to write a coherent post.

I guess what sums up my feelings is America can only be better with healthy, (read access to our amazing health care) educated, (yes I think college should be free), and productive citizens.

Also I forgot about the world view that helped me break through lol. My husband is a first generation Greek man. His parents came from Greece in their teens. They always seem to have people over from Greece and the dinner topics always seem to turn political, it was quite a shocker at first to hear some of the stuff that was said, after being raised that everyone loves the USA

On edit. You were talking about greed. I'm a Christian and it astounds me to hear the right talk about how we are going to hell if we allow things like gay marriage (I'm all for btw), abortion, sex ed, etc. I do believe this country may be going to hell, but only because of the level of greed our government encourages.

11. I asked one of my "colleagues" if God
looks down on those who willfully avoid the truth this morning (after reading the thread on Intellectual Conservatives).

I thought the old guy's head was going to explode. First off, God chose dumbya to lead murrica and the world. Secondly, dumbya has always told the truth. And finally, Iraqi's need to be saved by murrica and introduced to democracy so they may enter the kingdom of heaven.

At least that's how I see his mind working.

The freepers only laugh at out little minds and hollow arguments. Regardless of what is written on this site, you cannot change the minds of those who have had them mdae up for them.

apparently seeing through prisoner abuse spin.

Made it quite plain he wanted nothing to do with our "socialist" tendencies... but was NOT a stupid dittohead.

So I think there are SOME people capable of coming here and absorbing some sense.

Or at least engaging in some discourse on some middle ground.

16. No we are the enemy to them and they need an enemy
I think that with Communism gone as the boogie man, they have made liberals their boogie man. That's why the conservative talk shows make money. They take advantage of the freeper's fear of liberals.

Freeper types are always looking for someone to blame for their condition, (see, "it's Clinton's fault"). Liberals are now the cause of all that's wrong in the world. If the war is going bad, it's because something the liberals have done like release pictures of prison torture. If the economy is bad it's because the liberals won't pass more tax cuts. If the nation is going to hell it's because the liberals are blocking judge nominations. And the beat goes on.

Freepers need us to be here. They need a hate object.

If they were to learn something from us it would require a paradigm shift and they rarely happens.

24. Very much of that is true, but
as a reformed Republican I can say that not all, most perhaps but not all, need a hate object. That is one of my many complaints with the Cheney regime; the word hate comes out in every other paragraph.

25. I don't know, they're really stubborn...
I can't believe how they justify some of the things they say. They think we're all crazy and America Haters. I've heard "conservative" talk show hosts and other media personalities say some of the most horrendous things about liberals and democrats. Michael Savage yesterday actually blamed the Democrats for the beheadng of Berg. I lurk at CU, and they're pretty dang vile over there. I heard someone say recently that a vote for a republican is done out of sheer stubborness, not wanting to admit how worng the whole administration is. They won't learn, they just won't.

30. Totalitarians like Nazis, Commies and Busheviks are already gone
That's what makes them so valuable to their Masters.

They are so Orwellian and crazed they would happily kill us if ordered to do so (then go out and tell everyone the murders were "just a harless fraternity prank).

Bottom Line: Beware of Nazi Monsters. They ALL wind up doingthe same things in the end. The Busheviks are no different.
