RIAA vs Chippewa Falls High School prom committee
(snip)

He said the CDs were produced as an innocent attempt to give those attending prom a piece of unique memorabilia.

The husband of a school secretary, a high school counselor, and members of the junior class copied three songs onto CDs using computer equipment off school district premises.

The custom CD cases were purchased by the prom committee for $3.69 each, or a total of $1,845, and were paid for with proceeds of junior class fundraisers, prom officials said. The CDs were given to 500 people who paid a $14 admission fee to attend the prom.

The prom committee did not seek permission of the copyright holders for the songs "Walk Like an Egyptian" by The Bangles, "Born to Fly" by Sara Evans and "100 Years" by the band Five for Fighting.

1. This is why we need to fight the RIAA.
I mean, come on... the Bangles are DEAD AND GONE AND NEVER COMING BACK. Their music ought to be public domain; sadly, corporate personhood has allowed corporations in the recording industry, in this case, to usurp the public good; in this case, the activities of a high school graduating class.

Once we get computerized brain implants, at the rate things are going, you'll forget what you hear on the radio as soon as you stop hearing it if you have an implant with DRM. And no, I'm not kidding; moreover, I think the RIAA would do exactly that right now if they could.

Sherman's a sick suehappy bastard and I challenge anyone at all to prove me otherwise. This man is an Enemy of the People if there ever was one, and he's using our own laws to screw us and enrich his corporate friends.

GOD, I hate this issue, and its results crop up again and again and again.... corporate personhood has to go!!
