what other 18 states have "recall" laws? |
|
this is a crime...i thought recall laws were for governors that commited crimes or did illegal things. NOT for convience of a party to overturn an election just because it can and unseat an elected rep and purchase the seat...this sets a dangereous presedent...these repukes have destroyed democracy...made a shame of the process...should we follow suit and buy some red states?

I see the gopher state has recall provisions too! That'd be so bad if someone marched on the capitol in St. Paul with a recall for Pawlenty.

12. Minnesota's recall law is tougher than California's |
|
There was an attempt to recall Ventura that was turned away by the State Supreme Court.
The first thing that has to be done is the reason(s) for a recall must be enumerated (malfescence, felony) and, I think, a certain percentage of the electorate must sign on for the Supreme Court just to review the charges. When enough signatures are gathered the petition is taken to the court which decides if there is enough reason to proceed.
We are forutnate that our state Supreme Court remains balanced - I'm sure there weren't many justices that had any great affection for Jessie but (and I was no fan of him) I think they did review the evidence fairly and made the right decision.

7. If they can't recall the Governor |
|
then I guess they'll sue him or her like a couple of righties here in Iowa are. Christopher Rants, House Speaker, is suing Gov. Vilsack over line-item vetoes. Apparently, Rep. Rants is afraid that Gov. Vilsack is going to use the line item veto to nix some of the Repub programs and cuts. www.theiowachannel.com/wtc/2368824/detail/htm

a few bucks. That's what the left needs. I know the purists will say that the truth is our best weapon, but not if the word doesn't get out there in the first place.

11. No, recall is a 'vote of confidence' -- it's political, not legal |
|
Edited on Mon Aug-11-03 11:37 AM by Mairead
Recall is not the same as impeachment. Recall is an 'un-election'. It's a democratic power, just as initiative and referendum are.
If we had recall available to us for every office, we could have chosen to sack the Chimp. Actually, if we had recall available for every office, the Chimp would still be Governor Chimp (if that!), because the Felonious Five could never have installed him -- and if they'd tried, both he and they would long since have been out on their kiesters.
Recall, like initiative and referendum, can only be abused if we allow it to be. Democratic power is always a good thing--all we have to do is get off our arses and use it.
