Email from my idiot brother (who I still love). |
|
Got any pointers on how to respectfully respond to this bullsh*t?
To answer your email, I do agree that the plan for world domination is wrong, but we must be aware of all plans to dominate the world, not just the ones from within. Sadly though the United Nations and the European Union want the same thing, as does many other less powerful groups. The problem in the US is that John Kerry wants to turn out country over the United Nations. Granted, I don't much care for Bush's handling of Iraq and his picks for V.P. and staff, we are still a sovereign country. Under Kerry we would give up out rights to defend ourselves from forgien threats. What is needed is balanced leadership. The US should be a dominate world leader and the rest of the world should respect us because we haven't taken over, but other countries like France and Germany won't cooperate, because they are to busy selling weapons to people like Saddam and others like him.

1. What's wrong with the UN wanting world domination |
|
the UN is worldwide, who better to have control over it?
or you could just point out that they actually don't anyway.

13. the author is simply ignorant and misinformed |
|
The UN has always been under the thumb of the US, especially so since the USSR fell. It's in New York City for God's sake! France and Germany were MORE than happy to cooperate on Iraq, but while Powell was trying to spread around patronage and oil deals, Rumsfeld was insulting them with "Old Europe" slogans. What did you want France and Germany to do, go against their own people and renounce Democracy to "Bring Democracy to Iraq"?
The relative is simply misinformed, FOX News no doubt, and doesn't care to educate himself on the real situation. It's not difficult to do. Sad, but true. I can't be bothered to have sympathy for them anymore.

could be that powerful. WE HAVE JUST LEARNED A LESSON! We, the USA, are too powerful. For a long time Russia kept us honest. When Russia fell, it opened us up to being taken over by these fascist oligarchists. There was nothing really to stop them. We were asleep on the job of preventing a take over.
Do you think handing world power to someone else will make a difference?

2. I recently converted my 67 year old dad to the Democratic party |
|
Edited on Tue May-18-04 09:30 PM by powergirl
He's been a lifelong Republican and pretty much believed everything Brit Hume had to say. I recommend the Michael Moore book, "Dude, where's my country." There is a chapter in the book that gives step by step instructions on how to deal with conservatives and make them see the light. I used it on my dad and it worked. I converted my brother last year. If I can do it, I know you can. Good luck and let me know if it works!!! :toast:

Sorry. I'd say the same thing about mine if he unloaded this kind of crap on me (and he has said some similar things on occasion). Can't pick our family, though.

twenty-odd thousand nuclear weapons, hundreds of overseas miltary bases, most powerful army in the world, and god-knows how many handguns, uzi's and other freaky weapons.
Yep, the world is going to take over the United States.

6. I'm assuming your brother isn't very old. But this is what I see here: |
|
This old saw was old during the eighties. The Berlin Wall is down and unless he's talking about some kind of 'plot' for Islam to 'take over the world' then what about Christianity? You might want to ask him about why Bush talked to end timers before changing course on Israel with Sharon.
"but we must be aware of all plans to dominate the world, not just the ones from within."
Demand the proof here. This is laughable. Tell him to put down the John Birch brochures and put proof on the table. Sadly. Good grief. Demand proof.
"Sadly though the United Nations and the European Union want the same thing, as does many other less powerful groups. The problem in the US is that John Kerry wants to turn out country over the United Nations."
Again, demand proof. This is crap. Demand proof. Tell him it will be good for him to do this for his own sake. And tell him you won't take as truth a source with conservative dimwit ties.
So with this:
"The US should be a dominate world leader and the rest of the world should respect us because we haven't taken over, but other countries like France and Germany won't cooperate, because they are to busy selling weapons to people like Saddam and others like him."
He's saying its alright for America to dominate but no one else. They are also supposed to respect us -without us having to earn it- because we haven't invaded them?!?! You need to send him the picture of rummy shaking saddam's hand and give him websites that show how much stuff we sold to them that made the atrocities possible.
Poor guy. Needs an education. But then, just sucking along believing anything and expecting people to bend their knee to us for being Americans even when it isn't in their best interests is easier. Fight ignorance with truth.

7. I have family members like this too |
|
It's commonplace when they live in Freeperville places like outback Arizona and such.
They really believe that there is a plot to turn America over to the UN (as if the UN WOULD WANT IT). I remember that when Clinton was Prez, my mom and sister telling me that because Clinton was making some of our national parks WORLD HERITAGE momuments, that we would lose any right to visit them and that the UN would take over the running of the parks and so on... all a bunch of utter horsehockey, but there it is.
You should point out to your brother that it wasn't France selling Saddam weapons, but the United States under Reagan. Show him the picture of Rummy with Saddam. Ask him WHERE Saddam got those chemical weapons that he had back then.
Probably won't help... but sometimes facts will change peoples opinions.

11. I'm confused. Which country does John Kerry |
|
want to turn over to the United Nations ? Iraq ? When did Kerry say we should give up our rights to defend ourselves ? Has this person actually read anything John Kerry has said ? As far as the rest of the world respecting us, Bush has taken care of that for as long as he is in the White House. He is the most hated man in the world and he has done everthing he possibly could to make it happen.

Hey there I got family in "Outback Arizona," and they and their neigbors are in full fight mode to defeat Georgie & Thugs. They all have computers and have become really proficient in researching and getting the word out to family and friends throughout the world. You got quite a few educated people here in the "Outback," that make the freepers wonder what hit them. Even converted a few.

FWIW: I just got back from my golf league, especially the 19th hole.
The UN was invented by the US! It is our creation! After WWII the soviet sphere of influnce decided that they wanted to raise an iron curtain, the US and allied sphere of influence (with the US as the BIG dawg) decided to promote democracy, fairness and establish a worldwide confedertion of sorts to ensure that a regime like nazi germany was never able to arise again. It is a noble experiment in a global system of cooperation. I reiterate, the USA DEMANDED the UN, created it based upon constitutional principals in the hope of a better world for all.
BTW: google sadaam and rumsfeld and click images. NO ONE sold sadaam more weapons, includin WMD's than the USA under repug administrations. WE helped insert him into office and backed him for 2 decades, especially during the iran/iraq war.
ok, enuf. i need to hit the road, shot a 41 and am pleased and celebrated.

16. kerry doesn't want to turn the US over to the UN |
|
he wants to turn some of the responsibilities of IRAQ over to them. pretty huge difference there, and a heck of a lot better than bush's plan to turn iraq over to... well... he doesn't know that yet... but he definately knows he'll be giving it to whoever will take it, ON june 30th.
don't give up hope, i've converted my brother who is a fundie right wing, abortion-hating christian in mississippi, who also is in the military. he still won't vote for kerry (yet), but he definately won't be voting for bush, either. no easy sell, but he served in afghanistan, and he was able to see the glaring differences between "his just war" and the pathetic unjustifiable mess in eye-rack.

20. Yeah. Typical conservative arguments. |

They make outrageous assertions and then want you to refute them. The best you can do is require them to offer proof. However, most are hopelessly indoctrinated into the neoconservative ideology. They are beyond reasoning.

Cheney's sale of arms and WMD to Iraq. The rest of the world should respect us because we haven't taken over?? We have military bases in many, many countries for no reason at all. Does anyone have military bases in the US?? We have monopolized their economies and overthrown any leader who is not pro-US corporation.
He is just very poorly informed.

24. A litle bit "John Birch", a little bit PNAC... |
|
The Birchers have been going on about the UN "taking over" the US as long as there's been a UN. The big stink during the "Happy Times" (Big Dog Years) was that US troops were gonna "be required to wear the uniform of a Furrin Power"... Blue Berets. that's right, the freakin' HATS.
And his arguments for why the US should be dominant were cribbed right off the PNAC webpage. You should caution him about plagerism.

25. I have a brother like this. |
|
Only your brother can actually make sentences out of his incoherence.
I guess he thinks that the EU, UN, and "less powerful groups" want world domination which he feels is sad and wrong. Whoopdi-scootie.
He thinks Kerry would give US to the UN. That would be an interesting transaction. A guy volunteers for heavy action in a questionable war, risks his life defending his country in that war, and suddenly he wants to stop defending America and to turn his sovereign country over to a group of people who are all talk. And more, only people who oppose Kerry are privy to this knowledge, and certainly they are not self-serving rumor starters to some impressionable dupes. At least the impressionable dupes hope.
Under Clinton the world did respect us. The world thought Bush was idiotic, let 9/11 happen (taking a month-long vacation after hearing the warning), and entered Iraq with lies for reasons -- even lying to his own Congress (a high crime) in a State of the Union speech. The brother wonders why France and Germany disagree with us, I wonder how much of our tax dollars are borrowed to pay for Bush's new friends to cooperate with us.
Maybe we'll deserve some balanced leaders if we have some more balanced voters.
