Nader has done a lot of good things in his lifetime, and it's not productive to turn against him now. Doesn't mean you have to vote for him, but let's not eat up the guys who are basically on the good side.

40. Nader wanted to "hurt" the Democrats |
|
I read a quote from his nephew, who was serving as his campaign advisor in 2000. Someone said to him that if Nader dropped out it would help Gore defeat Bush. His nephew said that's right, but they weren't going to do that. They wanted to hurt the Democrats.
He has a chip on his shoulder about something.

His nephew said that's right, but they weren't going to do that. They wanted to hurt the Democrats.
Hurt Democrats? Well, if you think forcing Democrats to stand up and show their liberal colors is hurting Democrats, then I guess you're right. I think Democrats let themselves get hurt.
Back in 2000, it seemed as if there wasn't much difference between the two parties in any way that would make much difference. Gore was so worried about distancing himself from Clinton's penis that he managed to distance himself from a lot of the good, liberal ideas that Clinton worked to implement. Plenty of people knew then that Bush is stupid, but Gore simply rolled his eyes heavenward and failed to attack and challenge as he should have. Nader didn't lose the election for Gore. Gore lost the election all by himself.
The other thing you're ignoring is that no one imagined Bush would be so bad. Plenty of people saw him as a stupid person, but no one really saw him as evil.
Speaking of evil, do you really imagine that had Nader not been in the Florida picture, Gore would have won Florida? Knowing what you now know about the Bush family and friends, do you not think that even more "felons" would have been purged from the voting records, and even more people from "certain communities" would have met with roadblocks on their way to the polls? Do you not imagine that more Republican overseas absentee ballots would have been "discovered?"
I think the Republicans knew all along that the election was in the bag for them. They had made absolutely certain of that. If they had to adjust their plan a bit at the end, they had Plan B ready to go... and Plans C, D, and E. And they probably figured that Gore would roll over also... instead of investigating and proving what was going on, which we all know about now and still haven't done much about BTW.
I think it's counterproductive to dump on Nader, and it would be far more productive to keep our eyes on Florida and on every other state in the union at election time. The Bush group may be bold enough to try to pull the same stuff again in Florida, but they may actually be smart enough to pull it in some other state if they think no one's looking. And, we won't be looking if we're so busy looking at Nader.

If Nader forced "Democrats to stand up and show their liberal colors", then why do you continue to complain that Democrats aren't standing up?
Nader has accomplished nothing good.

91. Illustrates the anti-Nader point |
|
Most people DID realize Bush would be this bad. Just not 2.5% of voters.
There were vast differences between Gore and Bush. About 2.5% of voters didn't pay enough attention to understand this.
And Gore was doing a fantastic job of sounding like a populist liberal. You could tell by the way the media kept saying he was a populist liberal, how his message kept sounding like a populist liberal's, how his convention speech sounded exactly like a populist liberal's.
I do agree that Nader had nothing to do with the way Bush stole the election. Without Nader, it would have been a different race, with different turnout dynamics. It's impossible to reconstruct it.
But Nader tried to help Bush and hurt Gore. He campaigned actively against the closest ally he had ever had in DC, the man who literally wrote the book on environmental responsibility, and he openly favored a man and a party who scoffed at and despised him. If you think that makes Nader worthy of praise, then you have self-loathing issues. Nader was an ego-maniacal fraud, and he was played by Bush like a drum. I'm sorry for those who are still fooled by him. He will give you more Kool-aide if you let him.

97. Gore is a populist liberal |
|
He had some wicked ideas like having a tax incentive for hybrid cars. He created legislation that helped the high-tech revolution. People don't realize how awesome Gore is and Gore didn't do a good job of getting that message out. The media didn't treat him fairly but still the election was his to lose. If Jeb's boys hadn't purged Democratic voters in Florida, then Nader would not even be an issue.
Man, I wish Al Gore was president, but I'll settle for Kerry.

nader would have to find some way to retrieve his power from the corporations who sponsor him and who he lobbies for while claiming he isn't, before he would have any power to give to the people.
And he doesn't have a clearer mind, he's like Bush-- he just clears out anything that gets in the way of his opinions, so he thinks it is clearer. That's not clarity, that's blindness.

If YOU support Nader, you don't know what he has said or done. And I'm not a teenager. I survived the Reagan era, and though Clinton wasn't as liberal as me, at least not in what he accomplished, he was a savior after that. For Nader to openly campaign for a return to Reagan is beyond unforgiveable. It's condemnable, and eternally, barring a great act of contrition and atonement.
And if YOU support Nader, I'd suspect you are too young to remember Reagan, and how hard we fought to get someone who could overcome him, and how we managed to sneak Clinton in, and how we were poised for the payoff with the more liberal Gore to take us further to the left, perhaps even over the mid-point on the whole left-middle-right line. I'll never forgive Nader. I don't blame him for Gore losing, since Bush cheated to steal it from Gore. But I blame Nader for trying. I'm not out for revenge, I've just learned that Nader can't be trusted. Sad that not everyone has.
Nader begged publicly for this meeting. Kerry shouldn't do it, it's just a trap on Nader's part to help Bush win re-election. That's my suspicion. If Nader drops out after this, with no concession from Kerry, then he'll be off the hook. But even if I forgive the thief, I won't leave him alone with my jewels again.

It's the first mistake Kerry has made, seeming to try to appease an adversary. The only good point is that Nader clearly begged for the meeting, so at least Kerry doesn't appear to be chasing him. But Kerry should not meet with Nader unless Nader drops out. Until then, he is the self-declared enemy.
Nader betrayed everything he once stood for. There is no reason to remain loyal to him except blind muscle memory.

Nader is running AGAINST Kerry in the GENERAL ELECTION. He has no right to expect ANYTHING from President Kerry. What do some people think that Ralphie is a special case. Nader wants Kerry to LOSE the election, otherwise he wouldn't be running.
Its sickening that an egoist like Nader who can't drum up any significant popular support for his positions is running only because he hopes the election is close enough that his small number of votes will be the difference that prevents a Democrat from winning. He deserves nothing but contempt.
Thinking that Nader somehow "deserves" a cabinet position is no different from arguing that Aschcroft should be kept on as AG.

48. That's a decent idea. Nader would make an excellent EPA administrator. |
|
And I DO think Nader can offer some good in a Kerry Adminstration. EPA adminstrator would be a good match for him.

63. Another good idea. Nader has talked about consolidation of the media... |
|
One of the FEW people out there who seem to be concerned about this. After the low point of having Michael "I'm the tool of the corporate media" Powell as chairman of the FCC, Nader would be a very good choice.

Did we run out of democrats?
Maybe just Democrats who would do as good a job, eh?
Will Kerry give the Libertarian and socialist party candidates cabinet jobs too?
Then I certainly hope you aren't one of the folks who is toying with the idea of McCain for Vice-President!
Actually, although I don't much like McCain at all, I do think that the best person should get the job. If that's a Socialist, so be it.
It might be just as hard for the Socialist to work with Democrats, but if s/he is willing to try... great!

80. FCC would be great. Media breakup needs a persistent |
|
nagging attack dog to ever make it happen. Don't you agree media consolidation is wone of the biggest problems affecting a free press in our country?
I don't like Nader because his ego costs the Dems votes, but he doesn't seem to be affected by large corporate donations and has been fighting Corporate control for a lot of years.
One of the better ways to get him off the ballot is to let him use his abilities to make a difference. Sure it's salving his ego, but so what. If it helps fix some of the problems in the Country and helps Kerry win at the same time, what's the problem?
