6. Oh, yeah, they just HATE each other.
Bwahahahahahaha.

(I saw that interview with Dean on the BBC where the
questioner kept asking him if he liked Kerry or not. I guess
this answers that question once and for all.)

9. "Political Odd Couple Forges Friendship"
is from the NY Times:

Sitting across from each other Monday night at Higgins, one of this city's best-known restaurants, Senator John Kerry and Howard Dean talked health care. They both had the halibut. Then on Tuesday, they spent most of a four-hour plane ride sitting side by side, even playing a round of hearts (this time, Dr. Dean won).

This year's political odd couple, it seems, are forging a friendship, as sure a sign as any of a Democratic Party unified in wanting to oust President Bush.

"It was really nice. He walked into the restaurant and everybody applauded; I walked in and everybody applauded," Mr. Kerry, the presumptive presidential nominee, said of his vanquished rival. "We looked at each other and said, 'Did anybody think five months ago that we'd be doing this?'

12. isn't that the truth
"Mr. Kerry, the presumptive presidential nominee, said of his vanquished rival. "We looked at each other and said, 'Did anybody think five months ago that we'd be doing this?' "

while most expected dean would say he would support kerry i don't think anyone expected it to go this far. but i'm glad they are really having a good time with each other. kerry's stepson also went to vermont and met with dean personally. i thought that was nice. he also posted on dean's blog.

20. Ooh, that is the one where he really hit back at Sebastian!
Dean told him..."I am not going to help you badmouth Kerry!" It was a good interview, but they all keep doing that. Dean told him flat out he really did like Kerry a lot.

Then he proceeded to bash Bush and shame Tony Blair, and talk about the mercenaries and all the other stuff our media misses.

21. Yeah, that was the one.
The interviewer spouted almost every single RW talking
point there is re: Dean. But Howard handled himself with
grace and humor.

I sure do miss him.

8. Where oh where is THAT Kerry on the trail?
Doesn't he realize THAT part of his personality is what the public LOVES! Somehow I knew it wa there....somewhere.

Gore has a fun side too, we just never saw it!

Kerry's been in public life long enough that it shouldn't be nervousness in front of a crowd or a camera.

PLEASE John, remember why a lot of people say they like Shrub...."he's a nice guy, and I'd like to go have a beer with him."

10. he is that way during informal campaigning
often after he gives the speech he stays around and meets people, shakes hands, takes pics, but mostly answers questions and other small talk. he is very good one on one and gets along very well with people. he puts on a serious attitude during speeches and big interviews because i think that's the way he wants to come across and i do think it benefits him. but when he meets people directly he is more relaxed .

13. I don't think it's a benefit!
Of course there are some speach topics that require somber speach, but he really needs to let the happy, relaxed, fun, John Kerry show through to the electorate!

Who would you rather have a beer with?

I HATE IT when the Pubs pull that line out of their BS bag of tricks!

I sure hate to always compare candidates to Clinton, but you sure never heard the Pubs ask that one when Dole was running, did ya?

15. Exactly
The pugs kept Dole's personality hidden, too. Turns out he's an incredibly funny guy. He might have gotten more votes if people had seen that. (Not that I wanted him to get more votes, mind you.)

14. So what do we do
to let his handlers know that it'd be advantageous for the general public to see more of the "informal" side of Kerry?

In the best of all possible worlds, the issues would matter most, but there's still a huge part of the public who make voting decisions based on that "friendly/warm/have-a-beer-with" image thing.

Yes, it's "not presidential," but Chimpy certainly lowered the bar for "presidentiality," didn't he?

16. I have heard that at least some of those close to Kerry read DU.
I have no way of knowing if this is true, but it would make sense that they would.

There is a contact link on the Kerry web site too. Maybe if they received enough suggestions along this line, they'd at least consider it.

BTW, TV made campaigns based upon personal appeal. Just listen to why a lot of people think Kennedy beat Nixon.

It was the fact that Nixon's upper lip was sweaty...made people trust him less...

19. yes they do
his stepson does for sure and maybe others. he did win iowa in part because of personal appeal. he knew he couldn't depend on the big media so he went directly to the people and by word of mouth and other grassroots ways he started to get more crowds. he does very well in the town hall style meetings also.
