AUSTIN - About 350 soldiers of the Texas National Guard's 386th Engineering Battalion will mobilize in June for deployment to Iraq, officials say.

They will provide protection for fellow soldiers and basic engineering work, including construction and road work. The battalion is equipped with wheeled and track vehicles such as armored personnel carriers, armored vehicle launch bridges, bulldozers, cargo trucks and Humvees.

This will be the first time the battalion has been activated since 1961, when it was called to Fort Polk, La., and served for nearly a year during the Berlin crisis.
