New Censorship Bill turns Parents into Prosecutors
http://www.cbldf.org/pr/archives/000181.shtml

Excerpt:
"On April 28, California Congressman Duncan Hunter (R) introduced legislation that could “turn parents into prosecuting attorneys fighting a wave of obscenity,” the representative told Family.org.

H.B. 4239, also called the “Parents’ Empowerment Act,” would allow the parent or guardian of a minor to sue in federal court anyone who knowingly disseminates any media containing “material that is harmful to minors” if the material is distributed in a way that “a reasonable person can expect a substantial number of minors to be exposed to the material and the minor, as a result to exposure to the material, is likely to suffer personal or emotional injury or injury to mental or moral welfare.” The bill has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee.

The bill allows compensatory damages starting at no less than $10,000 for any instance in which a minor is exposed to “harmful to minors” entertainment products."

Well my first lawsuit will be against the US Military for the thoroughly offensive photos of our torture of prisoners at Abu Ghairb (sp?), or the dead civilians in a wedding party. Or how about the Clinton impeachment hearings, where the Republicans seemed more than willing to flood the airwaves with oral sex and cigars?

1. Don't Forget The RIAA
They will probably try to warp the law for their own purposes.

2. I thought republicans
hated when the courts were used for BS lawsuits? I thought they hated attorney's too? Why can a child only be injured through entertainment products and not by anything this govt does? My first lawsuit would be against the military for it's not just a job it's an adventure campaign. Talk about injuring minors, gee.

3. Prediction: This will be used to sue public schools out of existence
Imagine 10 or 20 parents suing every teacher and administrator for corrupting the moral well being of their children with evolution, multicultural literature, and anything by MLK.

We need to stop this.

6. Hmmm
"...likely to suffer personal or emotional injury or injury to mental or moral welfare.”

By those standards, wouldn't armed forces recruitment literature be included?
