Apparently there's no Fallout from the Seymour Hersh article?
DU members were chatting on Sunday on how this is the big shoe that has dropped on the bush administration. What happened? It was barely mentioned during the week. All the pentagon had to say was it's a lie. I guess that's all it took to squash this, eh?

It's really sad how this administration get away with all this crap.

1. I think it dropped
because Hirsch couldn't go for the throat.....all his sources were "off the record" or "on background" so he couldn't drop the big one...........

which I posted here in GD and which was also in LBN.

DU'ers largely ignored it.

It's going to be in the May 24th issue. Is this the article you mean? (I think it's about Rumsfeld.)

much of it to do with Rummy and more specifically, Mr. Cambone (the scumbag). It went on sale last Monday.

Give him time, don't lose faith!

4. Wasn't the article this week just part of a series of articles that he
will be writing over the next several weeks? I remember seeing him on Hardball last week and he wouldn't answer some questions because he stated "I am still reporting on this".

I have been under the impression that he will have some more articles over the next couple of weeks. Anybody?

12. Waddaya mean NO fallout?
The media has been running with this story ever since. Congressional hearings. Courts martial. Follow up stories that corroborate his. Today Campbell Brown on MSNBC reported on atrocities at BIF that sources say far exceed what happened at Abu Ghraib.

Hersh started rolling the snowball down the hill and its steadily picking up mass and speed.

15. I think she's talking about...
the SECOND Hersch article putting the blame right on Rumsfeld and Cambone.

When it broke, THAT aspect of the story went dead as a doornail. Everything we are hearing is still dicking around with the lowest level of involvements.

NO ONE is pointing out that Donald Rumsfeld most likely LIED under oath before Congress about his approval of "Copper Green".

THAT is the REAL story, and it has been dropped like a hot potato.

33. Rumsfeld perjury
Edited on Fri May-21-04 07:01 AM by freeminder
form the SUPER article from Hersch:
http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content

<SNIP>
The abuses at Abu Ghraib were exposed on January 13th, when Joseph Darby, a young military policeman assigned to Abu Ghraib, reported the wrongdoing to the Army’s Criminal Investigations Division. He also turned over a CD full of photographs. Within three days, a report made its way to Donald Rumsfeld, who informed President Bush.

/<SNIP>

Contrast with Rumsfeld testimony
Q "when did you hear about the pictures"
A "some time... well.. must have been after the 15th... so some time in... January, february or march".

This article was and is mindblowing. You can put today's "new 6" photos right into it for illustration.

<SNIP>
“They weren’t getting anything substantive from the detainees in Iraq,” the former intelligence official told me. “No names. Nothing that they could hang their hat on. Cambone says, I’ve got to crack this thing and I’m tired of working through the normal chain of command. I’ve got this apparatus set up—the black special-access program—and I’m going in hot. So he pulls the switch, and the electricity begins flowing last summer. And it’s working. We’re getting a picture of the insurgency in Iraq and the intelligence is flowing into the white world. We’re getting good stuff. But we’ve got more targets”—prisoners in Iraqi jails—“than people who can handle them.”

Cambone then made another crucial decision, the former intelligence official told me: not only would he bring the sap’s rules into the prisons; he would bring some of the Army military-intelligence officers working inside the Iraqi prisons under the sap’s auspices. “So here are fundamentally good soldiers—military-intelligence guys—being told that no rules apply,” the former official, who has extensive knowledge of the special-access programs, added. “And, as far as they’re concerned, this is a covert operation, and it’s to be kept within Defense Department channels.”
/<SNIP>

"it's to be kept within Defense Department channels"

Guess that didn't work out. Pissing off the CIA is not a good idea.

in the Pentagon between the army and civilians (Rummy&co).
It was that discontent b that brought up the torture story (i.e. - they told on Rummy) and more is to be expected. W is toast if he holds on to Rummy - and being an ideologue, he probably will.
This is what the UPI guy said.

29. I like Campbell.
I've always found her to have that most important basic arttribute in a good reporter: curiosity.

I agree with everyone who thinks this is continuing to develop. It feels like the Fall and Winter of '86, after Hasenfus crash landed. Let's hope this time the Dem leadership has the guts to do what needs to be done and not wimp out like they did in '87 and '88.

After what happened in '98, when the Repukes used the Constitutional process as a wad of Charmin, I think they just might.

for some good reporting.

I like Campbell too. My gut feeling after watching her report was that most viewers would find her more credible than either the Pentagon spokesman who denied abuse at BIF or the Pentagon spokesman in Iraq who wouldn't answer any questions or even admit that the BIF facility exists!

32. Because Democratic politicians are cowards!
If this was Clinton, the Republicans would not rest until he was impeached, no matter if they were in the minority - they would never let it die, they would never give up, they would never be quiet.

Democratic politicians, for the most part (yes, there are a few exceptions), are Bush ass kissers who don't want to offend anyone.

Our leadership sucks. Bush should be getting pounded so hard over this that he doesn't even dare show his face in public.

You don't want the water in this pot to boil itself dry too fast...it can last the whole summer. Everyone in DOD is stonewalling but the evidence is mounting. Let it come out piece by piece until it becomes obvious to even the most thick-headed morans that the whole lot has been perjuring.

We have to get the Republicans to demand resignations, firings, or prosecution. But let's not get carried away or they might dump Bush* at the convention and nominate McCain instead...
