Protests cause stir at annual meeting
Demonstrators taunt Halliburton before arrests clear shareholders' way to conduct business

Halliburton's shareholder meeting on Wednesday attracted more than 300 protesters, including a jazz combo, women dressed in pink and a 25-foot inflatable pig.

Protesters identified themselves as human rights activists, environmentalists, pacifists and residents of cities as far away as San Francisco and Seattle.

They congregated on two blocks downtown between Halliburton's McKinney Street headquarters and the Four Seasons Hotel Houston, where the meeting was held, to complain about the company's role as the main U.S. contractor in Iraq and Halliburton's ties to its former top officer, Vice President Dick Cheney.

"A lot of the reason they're here is for political reasons," Dave Lesar, Halliburton's chairman, president and CEO, said after the meeting. "A lot of those individuals oppose the war. I'm a big believer in free speech, and I think the U.S. troops are in Iraq to create an environment where the Iraqi people have a right to speak freely."

1. Ha ha, charade they are
Halliburton is truly one of the more odious corporations ever to steal billions of taxpayer dollars while doing virtually nothing of worth.

2. They did put in some great water pumps in SA
My husband said they were almost as good as the English ones in Alaska.

3. "...set up for 150 shareholders to attend, but only about 50 showed up."
How many shareholders are there? Can we buy then out? This sounds ridiculous, that 50 people can determine the future of this multi-billion dollar criminal enterprise.

5. They were selective on who they let in. Medea Benjamin is a
stockholder and she had questions she intended to ask the officers of Halliburton. "They" would not let her in. It is in one of the articles, not sure which one. She is filing a complaint.
