Tell Congress we need civilian oversight of military prisons.

Tell Congress to create a new civilian agency with oversight over every US prison in the world.

It's admirable that the military is prosecuting seven people, but the mistreatment should have been stopped a long time ago.

The cilivian agency could report to Congress and the public.

Dial 1-800-839-5276 (Capital Switchboard) and ask to be transferred to the office of one of your Senators or your Congressperson.

Then please say you'd like to talk to someone about the mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners, and propose a new civilian agency to oversee all US prisons in the world.

2. Excellent point to make....
Where was the Congressional oversight....They were too busy sucking Bush's ass to be concerned about what was going on...

3. Rumsfeld is a civilian
Anything created during the tenure of * is likely to be tainted and corrupt to the marrow.

It wasn't the military as much as it was the "leadership" of the Pentagon by Rumsfeld which has led to these disastrous consequences. Needless to mention Feith's involvement.

4. Yes, but I mean a new agency NOT under the Defense Dept.
Edited on Fri May-21-04 12:08 PM by Eric J in MN
It's true that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld is a civilian.

The Defense Dept. has a military mission.

We need a new agency which reports directly to Congress whose mission is to protect the human rights of prisoners.

5. i thought "civilians" were the problem in the prison?
... in any case, we don't need a new "agency", we just need well-meaning, competent, and foresighted people running the agencies we already have....

imo

6. You know of course that the main interogaters were civilian
The Prisons were under civilian control. They were the ones in charge of the MPs. IMHO most of the problem with this administration is that it has put civilians in charge of all things the government is supposed to be doing itself.
