Gen. Zinni: 'They've Screwed Up'

"Regardless of whose responsibility ...it should be evident to everybody that they've screwed up, and whose heads are rolling on this?"
Gen. Anthony Zinni

(CBS) Accusing top Pentagon officials of "dereliction of duty," retired Marine Gen. Anthony Zinni says staying the course in Iraq isn't a reasonable option.

"The course is headed over Niagara Falls. I think it's time to change course a little bit or at least hold somebody responsible for putting you on this course," he tells CBS News Correspondent Steve Kroft in an interview to be broadcast on 60 Minutes, Sunday, May 23, at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

The current situation in Iraq was destined to happen, says Zinni, because planning for the war and its aftermath has been flawed all along.

6. It has to be damning, and accurate if Clancy is onboard for this one!
I'm a big Clancy fan, even considering his unwaivering support for his rightwing buddies.

Being a fan of his, perhaps I'm biased, but maybe he (accurately) views dumbass as doing more harm than good for his own brand of politics. Any person with an IQ of anything beyond a brillo pad should.

10. I don't mind rightwingers so much
But the guys in the WH now aren't right wing whackos. They're just plain whacko.

Much like Tom Clancy, even avergae, everyday conservatives are starting to get pretty upset with the Junta.

5. In a normal election year I would agree that that might be possible
I think this elections is all about emotions. The people who think that Gore won the election will vote for Kerry. The people who have to prove that Bush was the right choice all along will go to any lengths to prove it so.

Iraq has old-school Marine regretting support for Bush :

By Thomas E. Ricks
The Washington Post

12/28/03: (Seattle Times) Anthony Zinni's opposition to U.S. policy on Iraq began on the monsoon-ridden afternoon of Nov. 3, 1970. He was lying on a Vietnamese mountainside west of Da Nang, three rounds from an AK-47 assault rifle in his side and back. He could feel his lifeblood seeping into the ground as he slipped in and out of consciousness.

He had plenty of time to think while recuperating. He promised himself that "if I'm ever in a position to say what I think is right, I will. ... I don't care what happens to my career."

That time has arrived.

Over the past year, the retired Marine Corps general has become a prominent opponent of Bush administration policy on Iraq, which he now fears is drifting toward disaster.

Zinni, 60, still talks like an old-school Marine — a big-shouldered, weight-lifting, working-class Philadelphian whose father emigrated from Italy. Yet he finds himself in the unaccustomed role of rallying the anti-war camp, attacking the policies of the president he had endorsed in the 2000 election.

8. Doug Feith
Since Zinni is targeting Feith, the Slate article is worth another read.

Douglas Feith
What has the Pentagon's third man done wrong? Everything.

"Gen. Tommy Franks in Bob Woodward's Plan of Attack, in which Franks calls Feith "the fucking stupidest guy on the face of the earth."
