SBC Workers Strike for Job Security and Health Care

May 20—Despite workers’ attempts to reach a contract agreement during three months of negotiations with SBC Communications, the company, which made $8 billion in profits last year, is demanding employees take a lump sum payment instead of a pay raise—a move that would add more than $1 billion to the company’s coffers—and pay more for health care. Meanwhile, SBC is sending much of its new Internet and DSL broadband jobs to India and the Philippines—moves that have destroyed 29,000 American jobs over the past three years.
