"Don't you know we've changed the subject?"
Dana Bash on CNN just said that she called an official at the White house earlier today and asked a question about the prison abuse scandal. She said the official said sarcastically, "Why are you asking me about that? Don't you know we've changed the subject?"

My god, these people are shameless.

16. Not the Financial times of London today
This was in the Financical Times today.

Candid camera
The Bush administration began trying earlier this week to get Tom Ridge, homeland security secretary, booked on to the morning talk shows.

Initially, none of the three broadcast networks showed much interest. The country's focus - and the breakfast shows' - was squarely on Iraq and the president's falling poll numbers.

On Tuesday night, however, an anonymous senior administration official informed the Associated Press that the administration had evidence of al-Qaeda operatives in the US planning to "hit us hard" this summer.

Lo and behold, the networks changed their minds. Yesterday morning, Ridge appeared on Today on NBC, The Early Show on CBS and Good Morning America on ABC. The cable news channels filled much of the rest of the day with deliberations on the lurking threats to America.

It was enough to make a sceptical Washington press pack suspicious: was the administration trying to switch the subject from Iraq, which is souring sentiment towards the president, to the war on terrorism, which is still safer territory for Bush? Or was the administration just doing what it had to put the country back on alert? Perhaps it was all a coincidence.

2. Wow
Really suggests terror alert was to divert attention from prison torture scandal.

That quote is up there with Andy Card saying don't introduce new products before Labor Day!

4. Wow
I hate the Bush rhetoric!!!! The scare tactics are so low, but the truth is, the mainstream media are spreading it all around, and the average American is watching all that bullshit on CNN and Fox and eating it up. I want to puke!!!!!!!

3. Remember: "You don't roll out a new product in August": Iraq war.
They are evil, evil evil.

And Bill Schneider was jumping out of his chair, screaming that a terra attack helps Bush! A terra attack helps Bush!

This is some sick shi*t.

7. Bill Schneider doesn't know what he's talking about
Once people start souring on a president in an election year, it's virtually impossible to win them back. Terror alerts lost their effectiveness in helping Bush months ago.

17. OF COURSE Bill Schneider would be having a cow right now.
He's invested in this, too, as a member of the heinous American Enterprise Institute - right-wing think-tank from whose loins the PNAC sprang. Bill Schneider is an UNIMPARTIAL spinmeister for the right. He comes from them and is of them and knows who signs his REAL paycheck. It was just one or two weeks ago that he was spinning some numbers when they really started to go south for bush, and his usual "friendly" smirk at the end of his report was GONE. He was VERY sober, and somber, throughout, especially at the end. He's not happy. His people aren't happy. Their boy is failing them.

5. The are quite up front about their Orwellianism
Edited on Wed May-26-04 03:15 PM by tom_paine
I don't know which is worse, the Busheviks mimicking Nazi/Soviet/Orwellian Propaganda or the fact that so few people seem disturbed by it or even able to recognize it.

6. Will the media and Congress
PLEASE STAND UP AND DO THEIR JOBS!!!!!!!!!!! This story, this scandal, this slap in the face of American ideals, should not be allowed to get whitehouse scrubbed. What has happened to the congressional inquiries??? Sending a few troops to prison, and relieving Karpinski of her authority is hardly adequate.

8. Scare tactics...
I just hope they don't pull another tragedy to keep us in line. We maybe should let them think they are a success with manipulating us.

9. It's amazing that she reported this
That's a great signal that the press won't take the WH spin as much anymore. I hope so!

12. that's my take on it... they're peeling back the curtain
because they're finally realizing that the coverups are as interesting as the stories themselves.

11. "The boy who cried wolf."

The alerts aren't going to work anymore. Something is going
to have to happen before too much longer to get the desired
effect.

God, I hate these people.

15. Yep, the Nick Berg murder didn't work, , now they're resorting back
to their SOP of saying attack is coming. When that fails - watch out! We need to keep hitting the papers with letters about Abu Ghraib. Don't let them get away with this diversion.
