Judith Miller (NYT) Admits Being Little More Than a Neo-Con Stenographer
"My job isn't to assess the government's information and be an independent intelligence agency myself. My job is to tell readers of the New York Times what the government thought about Iraq's arsenal."

The New York Review of Books, February 26, 2004

(Cited in April issue of "Extra!" -- the magazine of fair.org)

1. Doesn't she realize...
Edited on Wed May-26-04 03:49 PM by FleshCartoon
...that she said that a journalist's job is to be the mouth-piece of the government?

:wow:

4. Then she should stop calling herself
a journalist. She obviously doesn't know the meaning of the word. WH spokeswoman would be a better job title.

8. I just checked Google for the diff between journalist & reporter.
I seems Judith is correct. Her job is to write a "journal" of the news of the day. A reporter on the other hand is to Investigate, edit, and report the findings.

I'm not trying to support Judith or the Times, just defining the difference in jobs.

20. Amazing thing is that we here at DU could tell what she was up to months
ago. But only now is the NYT admitting what was obvious.

It's funny because you didn't really need confirmation that what she was writing made no sense.

You could tell that it was internally inconsistent without having to know that she's practically the equivalent of a government propagandist.

Steno Judy. You're responsible for thousands of deaths, thousands of serious injuries, and a never-ending fiscal nightmare.

Stop rationalizing and admit it -- you are a horrid person.

13. But Judith.... you didn't write that you were simply telling
us what the white house believed, or you would have prefaced every story with that. You wrote the bogus tripe as if it was breaking/news/scoop/fact.

14. Judith Miller: White House Press Secretary
Edited on Wed May-26-04 04:43 PM by welshTerrier2
"my job is to parrot back whatever the government says ... i am an empty-headed conduit for statements made by the administration ... i ALWAYS clearly represented in anything I've ever written that I am nothing but a recorder ... i am NOT a reporter ... and my bosses and editors at the NY Times always ensured that the information I reported was credible ..."

The blood of tens of thousands of Iraqi and American dead and wounded is on her hands ... I hope she is convicted of war crimes for the disinformation campaign she supported ... misinformation is a very dangerous weapon indeed ...

source: http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2002/May-05-Sun-2002/opinion/18662347.html

But the press is the only business singled out in the U.S. Constitution and accorded certain privileges. The Constitution is primarily concerned with delineating the roles of government, delicately balancing the powers of the executive, legislative and judicial branches while reserving true sovereignty for the individual.

That phrase in the First Amendment, the one about not abridging the freedom of the press, foists on the press the role of the Fourth Estate -- a free agent that sits outside the halls of governance, with no power to impose itself, no expressed responsibilities, no guarantees of profitability. Just the implied duty to run and tattle to the populace about what their servants are doing.

16. "Steno Judith" just copies what the Admins tell her. I read that article.
it's an indictment of what "crap/syhophantic journalism" is today. And, while I'm trashing her..lets go after Howie Kurtz that asshole supposed "Media Critic" who works for WaPo!

But, Miller, led us to WAR! Howie just promotes his wifes PR Business that helped get Swartzenneger elected. Miller is dangerous..let's hope whore Howie gets "nipped in the bud." :-(

will go entirely unoticed by the group of mostly fools, poltroons, and bloated Busheviks that makes up Corporate TV Pravda.

"What are "journalistic ethics"?"

18. Hey Judith: Wait 'till your founding fathers get home
Edited on Wed May-26-04 05:13 PM by BevHarris
That is not what our founding fathers had in mind when they envisioned the role that a free press must play to protect democracy.

“No government ought to be without censors ... and where the press is free, no one ever will ... it would be undignified and criminal to pamper the former and persecute the latter .”
– Thomas Jefferson to George Washington, 1792

“Our citizens may be deceived for awhile, and have been deceived; but as long as the presses can be protected, we may trust to them for light.”
—Thomas Jefferson to Archibald Stuart. 1799.

“The press the only tocsin of a nation. is completely silenced ... all means of a general effort taken away.”
—Thomas Jefferson to Thomas Cooper November 29, 1802

21. This Thread Has Made Me Laugh, It Has Made Me Cry
Thank you everyone for a very cathertic experience.

I can only add that it's my most fervent wish that sometime, somehow it crosses Ms. Miller's radar screen.

Cheers

Her days at the NYT are numbered. I predict we'll be seeing her on Fox and at the Weekly Standard soon. She'll be welcomed as a hero of course.
