Oxyboilboy says that we cannot come from monkeys
because there would then be no more monkeys...they would have all evolved into humans!

We should be thankful that Asspustule studied science at that university.

Then Pigfucker said that he read "A brief history of time" and concludes that since there must be a beginning, god therefore exists.

Again, we should be thankful that Asspustule studied science at that university.

1. monkeys and humans, according to theory, EACH evolved from a
common ancestor. Homo sapiens is NOT descended from monkeys.

5. Exactly right, DebJ
It's a common misstatement on a par with saying, "I'm descended from my fifth cousin." No, your fifth cousin is your fifth cousin, contemporary with you. But you and your fifth cousin share a common ancestor, five generations back.

Tell you what, Pig Boy. You refrain from talking about things you don't know about, and . . . well, that would pretty much end your career, wouldn't it? Nobody's going to tune in for three hours every day about how to sustain an oxycontin habit, and launder money to avoid legal scrutiny.

4. I agree about monkeys and humans
But how can there be a beginning without a creator?

There is a paradox here. Something cannot have existed forever, nor can something have come from nothing.

But this paradox can be solved. If something which is not a part of this universe (G-d) created it, then something could come from nothing. Who made G-d, is, of course, the next dilemma, but at that point I'm willing to accept my inability to know and just be happy that I exist.

10. Why not accept your inability to know the origin of the universe?
Edited on Wed May-26-04 06:44 PM by jpgray
It is as unknowable as the origin of 'God', and there is far more empirical evidence that the universe actually exists. :D To just say 'God made it' is only trading one mystery that exists all around us for a mystery that may well have been invented by us, and may not exist at all.

17. But You Have, Mr. Dem
Overthrown your argument in stating it. If you can accept a paradox once removed, why can you not accept it straight up, or conversely, ay any point before an infinite regression of external actions to resolve it?

Your suggestion of an agent outside the universe contains even more dark delights. What, after all, can be outside the universe? Where could such a thing be? If it is outside a universe, or what will become a universe, how will it be able to affect it? What is the mechanism by which creation is accomplished?

There is no method of verbal play, Sir, that can demonstrate the existance of diety to a person who does not already believe the thing exists....

He said it would be impossible to raise the sea level. He used an ice cube in a glass of burbon as an example. He said no matter how much the ice cube melted the glass never overflowed. What an idiot. I can't believe logical people can listen to him and not scratch the shit out of their heads.

Edited on Wed May-26-04 06:53 PM by jpgray
Take his example of ice submerged in a liquid. Since water expands when it freezes, it displaces more volume than it would take up in liquid form--therefore it could not raise the level of the liquid. Melt ice into a liquid from outside the liquid, however, and then the level will rise.

26. Hmmm... I don't think so
Edited on Wed May-26-04 09:01 PM by troublemaker
I think floating ice displaces its weight in water. When it melts it should be the same size as the space it 'reserved' for itself in the water. Looked at another way, the portion of the ice sticking up out of the water should represent the entire extra volume of the total volume difference between the ice cube and its constituent water in liquid form. So as long as the original set-up has the topmost ice floating (as opposed to supported by the glass or supported by stacked up ice below, it shouldn't change the level any.

I think... (that's not to say anything about icecaps which area different deal)

25. How is there a beginning?
There may have been a "beginning" to the present form of the universe we live in, but as far as I can tell, time has always been and always will be - it is infinite.

Let's say the expanding/contracting universe theory is correct (of course that would only apply to the section of all the cosmos that we call the universe - there could be and probably are infinite numbers of universes out there) even if it's correct, this universe must likely has been destroyed and recreated an infinite number of times. Space and time being infinite is a tough thing to wrap your head around, but whether it's true or not has any bearing on the existence or non-existence of a deity. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that Limbaugh is an atheist. Nobody who believes in a just God could spew the lies and hate he does.

36. Even the "beginning" is disputable
Many scientists are coming to realise that the "Big Bang" theory is NOT the best explanation for the universe that we experience - there are too many anomolies (such as dark matter and dark energy) needed to sustain "Big Bang" theory, and competing theories that do not suffer from such anomolies.

The fact is, religious people cling to the "Big Bang" as it is their ONLY hope of scientific support for their own theory of the origin of the universe.

Once "Big Bang" theory is exposed as the mitsake that it is, the religious will have nothing left except their own imaginings.

37. um, Big Bang is being refined, not replaced
It's pretty clear the universe is expanding and was once compressed into something that, as yet, can only be represented as a mathematical singularity. Whether that was really the beginning of everything or part of something larger is still unknown, as are all the details of how the expansion happened.
