3. so can we assume there's more to Al Qaeda's recruits than
simply mad fundie Wahhabist Muslims? very few female Wahhabist fundies have a doctorate in neurological science.

Presumably atleast some people are joining Al Qaeda for reasons OTHER than religious fervour yet the analysis of Al Qaeda everywhere seems to rest pretty heavilly on Wahhabist Jihadi motives?

Adnan was living in Morocco teaching English.

March 20, 2003

<snip>

El Shukrijumah planned to return to South Florida in late 2001, but when the FBI interviewed his father at his home in Miramar, Fla., after Sept. 11, 2001, his mother warned him to remain outside the United States, saying she feared he would be arrested if he came back to the country, according to the FBI alert.

FBI agents checked out Masjid Al Hijrah mosque in Miramir, Fla., for possible links to suspected al Queda terrorist Adnan G. El Shukrijumah.
According to El Shukrijumah's father, he is living in Morocco, where he teaches English at a school, but the family does not know how to contact him.

Amer El-Maati was arrested and was said to have been torured in syria

Mr. El-Maati, a 69-year-old Torontonian whose son is being held in Egypt, was surrounded by reporters as he pressed for an audience to discuss the case with the minister.

Mr. Graham was not there, but a staff member said he would relay the request.

Outside, Mr. El-Maati told reporters his 39-year-old son Ahmad was monitored by Canadian spies before flying to Syria in November, 2001. He was arrested, tortured and made to sign a false confession before being handed over to Egypt, his father said.

Reporters noted this but asked no questions about Mr. El-Maati's other son, 40-year-old Amer, a wanted al-Qaeda suspect whose image is on the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation Web site. In interviews with The Globe and Mail, Mr. El-Maati said neither of his sons are terrorists, and that he has not seen Amer in years.

28. But other reports say he was still in Florida
The bulletin said Mr. Shukrijumah might try to cross American borders with a Saudi, Canadian or Trinidadian passport. The bulletin included photographs of the suspect, including one from a Florida driver's license issued in February 2001.

Neighbors in Miramar, south of Fort Lauderdale, said a man who identified himself as Mr. Shukrijumah had lived and had been seen there as recently as last weekend. Orville Campbell, 26, a commercial artist who lives in a nearby apartment complex, said he saw Mr. Shukrijumah barbecuing at 1 a.m. on Sunday with other people.

http://www.wise-paris.org/index.html?/english/othersnews/year_2003/othersnews030324c.html&/english/frame/menu.html&/english/frame/band.html

The FBI Thursday issued a worldwide alert for a suspected al-Qaida terrorist who has been living in Florida for years and was last seen in South Florida just days ago.

http://www.sptimes.com/2003/03/21/State/Terror_suspect_is_sou.shtml

Shame they didn't just quietly pick him up at a barbecue, rather than blast a worldwide alert. Of course, he probably was quietly picked up around that time, along with Siddiqui.

30. More March 2003 sightings of Shukrijumah in Florida
Law enforcement officials fielded numerous reports of possible sightings from Tallahassee to South Florida of Adnan El Shukrijumah. Officials at Vandenberg Airport east of Tampa turned over a videotape of a man matching his description who flew in and out of there Thursday. No sightings have been confirmed.

http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/nation/wire/sns-ap-terror-threat-gadahn,0,221204.story?coll=sns-ap-nation-headlines

May 27, 2004, 1:19 AM EDT

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. -- Adam Yahiye Gadahn was 17 years old when he walked into the Islamic Society of Orange County and asked for permission to worship there. The farm kid who grew up in a home with Christian roots declared himself a Muslim, ready to immerse himself in his new religion.

But his devotion eventually spiraled into trouble -- and an arrest.

Gadahn, who was named Wednesday as one of seven suspected al-Qaida operatives sought by the FBI, was later expelled from the mosque after attacking an employee. Records show he pleaded guilty to assault and battery charges in June 1997 and was sentenced to two days in jail and 40 hours of community service.

<snip>

Omar Gadahn, a college student, said he hasn't seen his brother in about five years. His mother last spoke to him by phone in March 2001. At that time he was in Pakistan, working at a newspaper, and his wife was about to have a child.

29. US sources initially confirmed her arrest
Reports of her arrest began when a Pakistani newspaper, The News, ran a story at the end of March saying Pakistani and FBI agents had detained Siddiqui in Karachi. But one week later, The News quoted Siddiqui's mother denying the report.

On Tuesday, two U.S. law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, initially said Aafia Siddiqui recently was taken into custody by Pakistani authorities.

But Pakistani officials never confirmed the arrest and later the U.S. officials amended their earlier statements, saying new information from the Pakistani government made it "doubtful" she was in custody.

http://www.belleville.com/mld/belleville/news/5698842.htm

Couple more quotes from that:

(Her mother) said she last saw her daughter as she got into a minicab along with her three children to go to Islamabad. She became concerned after "a stranger came to my house and threatened me."

The man rode up on a motorcycle warned her "not to make a fuss" about the disappearance if she cared for her daughter's safety, she said.

snip

Authorities say she visited the Maryland suburbs near Washington in December or January. Ismat Siddiqui said her daughter made that trip alone, without Khan or their children.

She was back in the US at the turn of 2002/2003?

31. another article about the wanted list
Terrorists on Ashcroft's 'Wanted List' Already in Jail

Prison Planet | May 27 2004

At least two of the terrorists identified by John Ashcroft as part of an 'Al-Qaeda cell' that is waiting to attack America this summer are already in jail. A respected website that holds databases on terror suspects lists Amer El-Maati as 'incarcerated'.

Likewise, Aafia Siddiqui, a female former MIT student, was arrested in Pakistan over a year ago, according to NBC. The 'cell' that these individuals are said to belong to doesn't even exist. The Abu Hafs al Masri group was described by the Boston Globe as a 'phantom organization'. Their researchers could find no evidence that the group was real.
