Bill Press thinks Al Gore was "over the top"...
It seems that Bill has been listening to the right-wingers too much. Anytime a Democrat really sticks it to the Repubs, they scream like hell. Then they get a Democrat to agree with their dismay and anger and , in the process, minimize what the Democrat said, and minimize the pain of the Repubs.

Bill Press did say that Gore's message was right but his delivery was a little over the top. But the message without the passion was not the same message. If he cannot get angry over what has happened in the last few weeks, he has been unconscious. Bill, stop listening to Buchanan so much. Al Gore was right on and people that heard him will judge for themselves, no matter how much it hurt the feeling of the Bush regime. Sometimes the truth hurts.

3. Perhaps he didn't see the ENTIRE speech?
The "heated" delivery was only about a minute of a 110 minute speech! Of course, people are judging this by the tiny excerpts shown on the news programs. It's the "Dean scream redux".

9. I would agree with Bill Press ...

... if conservative media pundits had taken Bob Barr, Henry Hyde, New Gingrich, ad nauseum to task for being over the top. But when elected Republican officials were/are calling Clintons, Democrats or Liberals "treasonous" and "scum", conservative media pundits fall right in step.

And it appears THEY have no intentions of becoming civil. So they will now have to put up with OUR incivility.

13. Amen and ...
... hallellujah.

My first post on DU was about how we (Dems) have to start talking the way they do. Why? Because it is effective. If you cannot say something with passion, why should anyone believe you?

The Reps have been telling lies with passion for years and it has worked well for them. It's not that big a stretch to think that telling the truth with passion will work for us.

If we didn't have a president who is "under the bottom" we'd have no need to go "over the top". :)

Bill didnt watch the speech. My guess is he only saw the clip they show in the soundbites. The part where he was really fired up was very short sort of like the Dean scream. the rest of the speech rocked the house and he wasnt even close to over the top.

I guess you just cant raise your voice in america anymore or you are over the top.

16. When EvILdoeRs are going "under the bottom," then
the truly patriotic American citizen must go "over the top" -- presenting facts and opinion with logic, ethics, and emphasis -- bearing in mind that the world is adrift in an overhyped information sea.

There must be a counter-balance to the low, low place Bush and his gang have dragged America. He and his oil compnay cronies are without honor; and they seem bound and determined to further humiliate our once honorable nation.

I, for one, am glad Gore went "over the top." Reach for the stars, buddy. America needs to go back to the high places of respect, honor, and purposeful, sustainable direction. To get to those high places again, we will all need to go "over the top" of the corruption and small-mindedness that have been characteristic of the Bush regime.

"Ad astra per aspera." To the stars through dreams (after cleaning all the rot out of the bottom places, of course).

{Adopting best schoolmarm Bill Press pose} When an illegally installed, corrupt regime starts a bogus war on trumped-up charges, and kills thousands and thousands of people, wastes billions and billions of dollars, and flushes America's image and prestige right down the crapper, you're supposed to register dismay or disapproval only with a pursed lip and perhaps a mild "Tut, tut."

27. Just my opinion,
Yesterday I read the transcript of the Gore speech, & I was amazed by it s power, & the strength of his arguments against the Bush cabal.

Last night, I watched the speech on C-Span, & thought it was better on paper.

Feel free to disagree, but Al Gore is not the most talented speech giver. It seemed that he was being overly dramatic for emphasis, not out of true passion.

His message was WONDERFUL...but I am afraid it was lost. Of course the media did not show any excerpts except the screams, which is what they did to Dean. But with Dean, I always felt it was sincere, & not an act.

It really is a shame, because he had powerful things to say, & they were lost in the coverage.

32. I so bloodly tired of the circular firing squad
These republicans have seriously, perhaps fatally, hurt our country.

How does one express to the millions of people who are paying attention that we have a real problem? With tea, crumpets, lace?

Let's US stop debating the pros and cons of niceness, and focus on repeating the substance of Al Gore's speech.

He is courageous and a patriot for not fading into the business world, and for sticking himself out there.

35. I agree with what you say about the substance of the speech
It was wonderful! I think he is the first person to say publicly what needs to be said.

He connected all the dots. And it was powerful.

I still make the point, if the media does not cover it, who hears it but us, & we already agree with him.

And I think the media has always been unfair to Al Gore, stereotyping him as a jerk.

I do not know what we do...that is my problem...who heard the substance of the speech, except for us?

33. So, the "wooden policy wonk" Al Gore is now "over the top." WTF?????
Guess if you show **any** passion in speaking out publicly these days, you get branded as angry, over the top or insane.

What a comfort it is to have a pResident who lies through his teeth daily, has dragged the U.S. down into a cesspool of global shame, hatred and divisiveness, but is never, never called "over the top." (Except for the handlebars of his bicycle.)

Yeah, that's the DLC message, be meek, be quiet, don't make waves, in fact perhaps it'd be best if you adopted an attitude of extreme GRATITUDE to the ReTHUGlicans for not striking your head from your body (oops! not suppose to alude to beheadings, are we? it's "insensitive"...You want a Trudeau-style apology? 41. Press is a panty-weight
Edited on Thu May-27-04 05:45 PM by SemperEadem
anytime anyone raises their voice in justifiable anger against the blatant criminal behavior of Bushco, here comes another panty-weight, casting offal all over the spirit of the message's delivery.

There should be no such thing as any Democrat in office who is not angry at how this country has been steered so far off course. Every last one of them should be pissed--like Gore and like Dean was back when he was running. Our country's esteem has been bitch-slapped by the right wing and neocons and the most, it seemed, that the Dems could muster was a whimper every now and then.

- These insincere criticisms by pundits on the right and left are part of an agenda to keep Gore from an effective attack against Bush* or taking Kerry's spotlight. It's disappointing that both parties are attacking him.
