The O'Franken Factor crushed Rush Limbaugh!
Olberman mentioned last night that Al Frankens show had ratings that are unprecidented for a debut show! Anyone else catch that?

The transcript for Olberman isn't up yet, but I found a bit of info here:

http://web.morons.org/article.jsp?sectionid=6&id=5072

According to the latest Arbitron ratings extrapolations, The O'Franken Factor crushed Rush Limbaugh in New York in April...

If you were an average 18- to 34-year-old in New York in April, you were 7 times more likely to be listening to Al Franken than Rush Limbaugh according to extrapolation of Arbitron ratings data (login/pass="freeread"). Air America Radio's WLIB beat WABC by a smaller margin among 25-54 year-olds.

According to the Chicago Tribune, "WLIB won sevenfold with a 2.9 share to WABC's 0.4" among the former group and "WLIB garnered a 3.4 share to WABC's 3.1" among the latter group between the hours of 10 AM and 3 PM, which comprises the last 2 hours of Unfiltered and all of The O'Franken Factor on WLIB and local radio personality John Gambling, Paul Harvey and Rush Limbaugh on WABC. The O'Franken Factor and Rush Limbaugh go head-to-head from Noon until 3 PM Eastern time.

Right-wing-generated rumours of Air America's quick demise have clearly been greatly exaggerated. Despite what amounts to a small set of problems unsurprising for any new business venture, Air America Radio has things well under control. Perhaps the Bush administration could learn something applicable to its out-of-control occupation of Iraq from Progress Media.

And most importantly this!

Air America radio network does well among group that advertisers covet

Despite ongoing financial woes, Air America Radio appears to have garnered a significant audience during its first month on the air, particularly among the younger listeners sought by advertisers.

An analysis of recently released figures from Arbitron, the radio ratings service, showed that in New York Air America beat Rush Limbaugh's station among 25-to-54-year-olds during the period that Limbaugh and Al Franken, the host of the flagship show "The O'Franken Factor," go head-to-head.

In Chicago, even though the network was available for only 28 days in April, Air America increased the average share of 25-to-54-year-old listeners on WNTD-950 AM from a 0.1 percent share in February to a 2 percent share in April.

I do expect to see *advertisers* clammoring for air time soon!

:bounce: YEEEHAW !!!!

3. thanks for posting that
It's odd to me how some of the biggest portenders of doom for this station are right here at DU. If it were fact, no problem. But it's amazing how much of it is sheer lies and lame conjecture.

5. Well, New York isn't exactly a hotbed of conservatism
But then again advertisers don't tend to spend huge dollars in rural markets, so go team go!

I expect the same sort of ratings in major metropolitan markets nearly everywhere (except Texas), which will hopefully translate into lucrative advertising revenue for the production slot.

34. Yeah thats why ...

They've had a Republican mayor for the last 10 years. And they're bending over backwards to host the Republican convention.

I'd agree though that New York is one of Air America's ideal marketplaces. But it bodes well for them since New York is the largest media market in the NATION!!!!!

11. I've heard about Sirus, is there a monthly fee? And, can you carry a unit
to home and car? In otherwords is their a portable unit that travels with you?

I know nothing about Satelite Radio, but from what I do know, it sounds a bit costly?

I know that in addition to car radios, you can buy a portable radio such as that you can take to the beach. Surf's up!

29. It is quite costly to get started.
You would need to docks. One for your home and one for your car. Plus you have to buy a reciever. It will cost about $200 to get started. There are two ways to buy the air time. You can buy a full year that averages about $10-$11 a month or buy it monthly at $12.95 a month. I buy it monthly. Mainly because after spending $200 to get started I couldn't afford to buy a year of air time.

17. YES.
The Audiovox plug and play unit has hookups for car/home and there's a boombox you can buy for work. I got the JVC, and as of yet, there's no boombox, but I sent an e-mail to JVC and asked for one, and they said they're working on it.

Just plug in your radio unit, to the bases in all 3 places, and carry it with you.

It's $12 a month, or 15 months for $150 when you buy the Audiovox, Kenwood or JVC. You request songs on the website, and you get a personal code to stream it on the web.

Sirius really is worth it! :yourock:

22. Here's a Sirius synopsis

1) Yes, you can get a unit that travels with you from home to car and back again. Costs vary, but I know Audiovox is giving away the receiver (it's a supposed close-out model, but it really doesn't matter) for the car. Installation costs should run about $150, and you'll get Sirius through your car radio by tuning into 88.5 FM.

For another $50 (I think) you can get a cradle/antenna for the home, and you can then transport the receiver from car to home, and vice versa.

2) Monthly cost for Sirius is $12.95, but if you pay up front for a year you'll get 15 months for the price of 12, or about $10.36 a month.

Hope this helps!

XM suppposedly has a stronger signal and has a portable boombox that I am interested in.

Not sure when I can afford this venture but??? ;)

32. A friend had XM
He took it back because of signal problems. We live in a hilly area. I never have a problem with the Sirius signal except when it's down-pouring rain. I have my satalite on top of the house pionted southwest. It's weather proof thank goodness.

12. I had to smile
When I overheard this at a party we went to a couple weeks ago. A wife was describing her husband's work habits. He has an office up in their attic, which is a beautifully finished off loft-type space, complete with brick walls and a view of the NYC skyline...very nice.

Anyway, she said, "He just sits up there and writes report after report and listens to Air America all day long."

But what I really loved was when the construction crew showed up for a renovation being done at my neighbor's. They were listening to AirAmerica.

13. People LIKE to listen to Al -
He is possessed with both common sense and a good sense of humor - this is becoming increasingly rare these days.

It also helps that he seems much less prone to the vitriolic intemperance that Limburger is famous for.

but I am guessing that all of these place have substantial numbers of progressives, though I am not sure about NC. (AndFlorida's are probably NorthEastern retirees?)

I keep waiting for DISH to put AAR on the air, but I have been hearing rumors now that they will not be doing so?

31. Traditionally conservative areas = less people.
Just judging from the red state / blue state thing, there is more concentrated listernership (more listeners/consumers) in blue areas than red, so that is a good thing!

28. Back into Chicago and LA?!?!?!?!??!

I hope these ratings will help Air America back onto the air in Chicago and LA. They now have some leverage if they can cut radio stations DIRECTLY into add revenue instead of doing strict leasing agreemants.

There is money on the table, some of these stations might scramble to get it now.
