Honestly. I haven't quite figured it out.
I've seen Al From serve as an apologist for Newt Gingrich and heard him try to minimize the left, but how does the DLC lead? What initiatives or policies are they pushing? When people here defend the DLC is it because they support particular objectives of the DLC (and what, specifically), or are they just defending an organization because they happen to be members?

6. The anti-DLC intensity here is just DUMB |
|
The DLC has been little more than a debating society since Gore kicked them to the curb in 2000, and before that, it was still mainly ceremonial. Pundits would consult DLC members because Bill Clinton had been their leader before he was elected, but even Clinton didn't take them all that seriously after 1992.
If you're all up in arms about the DLC, you're wasting your time. The DLC is a lot like its current exponent, "Joe-mentum" Lieberman. The mainstream of the Democratic Party is now flowing to the left and has become more populist.
The DLC was good for its time -- it saved a lot of Democratic power that otherwise would have been swept under by the Reagan/Bush(41)/Gingrich juggernaut -- but the tide has turned.
I appreciate the job they did a decade ago or more. But the scene is different these days.

I'm still wondering what those who defend the DLC feel they are defending? What's the "L" in DLC represent nowadays?

12. Well I'll give it a try |

I'm not a DLCer but it seems to me the gist of their being is to temper the message so it will appeal to the squishy middle. "Liberal" has been demonized for the last couple of decades so instead of trying to erase that injustice they have decided to go with it and say we're the moderate middle and not the "extreme" left like those "Liberals" are. We believe in Capitalism and Free Markets and NAFTA, GATT, WTO, and all things that involve capital including Capital Punishment. Where as "Liberals" put people first before capital. America is a Capitalist Society so Capital must be the Top Priority. Those Whacko Liberals want to put People First (Social Programs, Health Care, etc.) Without money how can any good deeds get accomplished. People won't vote for the Demonized Liberal so we must prove we are different. I think that is a fair representation of their positions. It isn't all wrong just wrong enough.
