I think the salute to WW2 vets that's been going on is a good thing. They deserve it.

But why the hell are these jackasses on televisionb so insensitive to those who are watching.

I am referring to the "death watch" they keep reminding us of. How fast WW2 vets are dyiong off.

I know people like my mother are watching. (My Dad was a Navy vet who died about 20 years ago.) I wonbder how she feels hearing nitwits endlessly reminding her that her contemporaries are dying off with increasing speed.

The poeple of that age already realize that. But I don;t see why the hell those idiots on the tube can't just focus on the tribute, instead of basically telling those older folks watching "Don;t foirget. You're going to die reall soon."

2. Furthermore..
It reminds those of us who no longer have our veteran fathers and grandfathers that they are gone and they will never see THEIR memorial. My grandfather, who served in the army and navy during WWII, died a little over a year ago!! I miss him and know that he would be proud to have this memorial!!

12. My grandfather
flew B-24 bombers over North Africa during WWII and he died two years ago this month. I miss him horribly. He was a good, honest, decent man (who also never voted Republican in his 80 years).

3. I agree

From looking at the crowd, I would have been reporting just the opposite.....

"Look at our Veterans and their families! They have come hundreds and thousands of miles to celebrate this day! The temperature is 75 degrees and they are walking miles to see this magnificent monument to their efforts. They look terrific!!"

My mother is over 80 and what I see these seniors doing today proves that they are strong and want very much to be a part of life. They have a lot of living to do and let's celebrate that to the world.

7. It speeds the process of thinning their most unprofitable demographic.

They want zero to do with seniors because the advertisers don't. So, the media turds of the BFEE cater to the consumers with the disposable income -- the twenty-somthings to thirty-somethings.

Oh yeah. The media ownership are solid Establishment types. Many of these are the heart and soul of the BFEE -- those whom the BFEE serves. They want to pay no REAL tribute to them or what the real men and women of World War II are.

Most of the men and women of the Greatest Generation fought to keep our nation free for ALL Americans. They are solidly Democrat in their party affiliation. That makes them personae non grata of the BFEE.

EDIT: typis

11. No disagreement here, just a question.
What exactly does "BFEE" stand for? I'm gathering it's something uncomplimentary to do with Bush, but...

13. Bush Family Evil Empire
Bartcop may've coined the term and acronym.
I prefer Bush Organized Crime Family, but it's really a Syndicate.
Either way, the top goon is a mere stooge.

BTW: A hearty welcome to DU, flewellyn!

14. Ahh, thanks.
I see now. Very clever. I often refer to Bush using a Babylon 5 reference (I'm a geek, yes), and call him "President Clark". B5 fans will get exactly what I mean.

And thanks for the welcome!

5. I agree!! And, I'm inspired and amazed by how fantastic...
... most of the old vets look, and sound, and how sharp they remain.

The media can go suck eggs.

6. my father, a WWII flying fortress pilot, would have been ashamed
of this 'glory to war' monument....

my dad was intelligent, and well-read on WWII and other conflicts...he loathed the day that he was drafted and ORDERED to KILL THOUSANDS by dropping bombs from the air on innocents....

until the day he died in 2002, my dad could hear the screams of those he killed...he prayed that God would forgive him every day of life....

as many who served in WWII, dad felt there was nothing about WAR that was 'glorious' or 'monumental'....in fact, anyone who reads much about WWII knows that that war was lost primarily because hitler was an arrogant commander like bush*, who wouldn't listen to his generals....Germany's defeat had little to do with America's belated involvement in WWII....

unfortunately, WWII has been SPUN into something real glorious by those war-profiteers who desire to continue WARS forever....people like bush* and his grandpa, prescott who funded hitler's rise to power and was convicted in NY of 'trading with the enemy'....

the Chimp, whose grandfather Prescott help fund Hillter's rise to power and that their family still profits from it was there to inaugurate it. The applause for Bu$h was polite but not long.
Then the media saying how he praised FDR. Yuck.
McGovern had a lot of pertinent things to say.
My father just died so he missed it by a few days.

15. Glad my Dad isn't around to see this travesty
he was a POW in the Pacific. Would not talk about it. Was in the VA hospital in Richmond more then he was home during my childhood. Us kids were invisible to him when we were growing up. My mother and his brothers and sisters told us he changed during WWII. He was a happy-go-lucky guy before he joined. He was better in later years but wish he had shared some of his pain. He would never eat rice, which I always thought strange when growing up as we were on a budget when it came to grocery shopping and rice was cheap. Now I understand. Wish I could tell him that. One thing is for sure - he would hate what * has done to this country. So sorry he didn't get to see this memorial. He never experienced the gratitude from the nation. He and a lot of others. God Bless You Vets and am happy to see you finally recognized. It took sooooo long. It's way overdue.

18. I'm so proud of my Dad
He is a WWII vet who served in India. He came back from the war and used the GI bill to become the first in his family to graduate from college. He never talked much about his service, deferring instead to what he called the greater sacrifice made by a brother who returned from Europe having fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

After graduating from College he became a teacher. He is a thoughtful and kind man, who put his greatest efforts in helping the kids who had it toughest (teaching high school before there was Special Ed.) He said he never gave an "f" without feeling he had failed.

When 9/11 happened and so many folks made the comparison to Pearl Harbor, my Dad told me it reminded him more of the bombing of Hiroshima. A devastating attack on civilians that would change the way we live forever.

I am so proud of my Dad.
