I have had a hard time watching the WWII memorial coverage
I was out of town this weekend, but I had a chance to watch some of the WWII memorial dedication, as well as much of the evening news coverage. Make no mistake about it, the memorial is well-deserved and appropriate. With more and more of these veterans dying every day it is essential that future generations be made to remember what they did for the nation.

Anyway, I found the news coverage to be repetitive, formulaic and boring. I was also especially offended by the subtle and not so subtle linkages made between WWII and the war in Iraq. We hear it from politicians, snooty newspaper columnists, conservative radio talk show hosts and even mainstream news anchors. The notion that the United States is operating in Iraq at anywhere near a position of moral authority as our participation in World War II is crass and offensive. It is almost as if the proponents of the Iraq war are seeking to borrow--no, steal--moral authority from World War and use it for the Iraq War. For that reason, and the fact that we have lost over 800 lives in Iraq over a lie, makes this the worst Memorial Day in memory for me.

2. I couldn't figure it out
until you said it. My father, a WWII verteran, would have dismissed this TV event with few words.
He died three years ago with no National monument. He never mentioned that maybe there should
be one. He was a decorated hero. Never complained ....

4. I haven't watched the coverage
because I know some would try and make the linkage with Iraq. To do so does an injustice to my father who was a WWII vet (not disparaging our troops now over there, but it's the principle of it).

6. The ceremony was wonderful till Bush took the podium!
To witness that phony AWOL coward introduced as Commander in Chief in the midst of so many TRUE HEROS was a bit much for my stomach!
