Why tear down Abu Gharib? |
|
The new prison may have shiny new cameras to spy on the people, but if the same corrupt people are running it, it won't make a frying fritter fingering of a difference. People will simply "not look". http://talkleft.com/new_archives/006580.html

1. There are three reasons. |
|
1) photo-op for Bush 2) billion dollar construction project for Cheney/Halliburton 3) it's easier than coming up with new-laws-and-oversight to prevent the mistreatment of prisoners.

Like 9/11, Bush waits for the horse to leave the barn. Won't get fooled again, (or whatever they say down there)

3. another reason is that Abu Ghraib stands as a permanent reminder... |
|
of US human rights violations and as a physical example of US hypocrisy.
Why wasn't Aushwitz torn down? Because the "victors" of that war wanted people to remember and having the actual camp preserved stands as a permanent reminder of the crimes.
The US wants Abu Ghraib torn down for the exact opposite reason.

When you get right down to it, it's an attempt to use 'magick' to make us forget what sick bastards they are.
Like this:
Abu Ghraib == Symbol of American Military Barbarity
Ergo, using the principle of Sympathetic magic, by tearing down the prison they symbolically tear down the 'idea' of the US Military being run by a bunch of sadistic fucks.
Doesn't actually CHANGE anything but perceptions, of course, but the Bush administration really only cares about perceptions...and money.

Bush inserted that into his lame speech without asking Congress or anyone else first. He thinks he is a dictator and can make proclamations like that. Taxpayers already feted out 50 mil to renovate it, and Bush cant just tear it down on a whim. Michael is there, his unit is staying, its not being torn down. Its just another one of Bush's thousand stupid remarks because he thinks he is an emporer.
