I know feelings are mixed here in DU, but even as a staunch opponent of Reagan and his party, I think it is always proper to give the dead their due ...
Reagan, for all his faults, was a human being, and I shall not wallow in hatred within my OWN core for reasons of ego and self gratification ....
Fare Well, Dutch, and may you find understanding of WHY a liberal heart is a loving heart ...

12. Goodbye, President Reagan. |
|
I'm very sorry that his life ended with Alzheimer's Disease. I can't think of a worse way to go. Regardless of his faults, I believed him to be a good person at heart. I hope he learned from his journey here on Earth, and that he finds some peace on the other side.
I really wish that everyone could exhibit good will toward others when someone passes away. Some of the sentiments expressed on this board toward Reagan do not show compassion and good will.
My sympathies to the family. I would much rather have Reagan for our President than the joke that lives in the White House now.

I'm not going to celebrate anyone's death. Although, in this case finding peace may have been a blessing for him and his family.
I will say, though, that if Bush tries to drape himself in Reagan's "legacy," I hope Nancy gives him a swift kick in the pants.

hahahahaha.....
bush* whole campaign trip to Europe is now just a total loss....funny as hell....while bush* excapes to vacation in Europe...ignoring the MAJOR homeland security issues at the CIA, now with no oars in the water, and bush*'s ship sinking fast, the big rats jumping off...the little rats jumping off...the bush* ship sinking....

I'm sure the Clintons will attend the funeral, as will Carter, Ford, & the Bushies. He was a former President, whether you like it or not.
I didn't like him as a President either, but I remember how childish and stupid I thought it was when either Laura or Babs refused to get out of the car at the WH until the Clintons were completely gone. Don't stoop to that level.

I just don't want them to further the idea that he was a great man because I lived throught the Reagan years and know how evil resulted from his Presidency.
I don't want to hear any speeches from Dems glorifying Ronald Reagan.

It's not a secret that Ron Jr, Patti and maybe Nancy are not fond of the Bush's. They might have felt that it was time for the old man to go in peace. They know that it will be out of their control to an extent what Bush will do to exploit Reagan's death. I'm glad that he is at peace.
Having lost my brother and father to long illnesses, it must be a relief to the family that he's not suffering anymore.
It make me sick to think that we allow people to suffer so long. As much as I wanted my cat to survive when he was sick, putting him to sleep was the right thing. My brother didn't have that option.

56. Welcome to DU. I Guess You Missed |
|
all the posts of people saying "I won't give in to hate" or "I can't bring myself to insult the man" etc?
I despised Reagan. I live3d in his california during his governorship, I SAW with my own eyes the damage he did while he was in power...
But I have not uttered ONE WORD of attack during his illness and I will not insult him in death!
The man's ACTIONS were evil... but he has to face his Maker same as all of us and I am sad to know that he died in such a lingering and suffering way...
This is the basic difference between me and a lot of folks. I judge a person not on what he or she *IS* but on wehat he or she *DOES* and I attack the act, not the person behind that act.
Lest you be too tempted to hate us all for the posts of a few, RE READ the threads and see how many people have REFRAINED from nasty comments about Reagan.
By the way.... how would you react (and how would many right wingers react) if they heard that Clinton had died?! THINK about that! I very much doubt that there would be much forbearance THERE!

Sadly, the post-mortem white washing has already begun, ad nauseum.
Reagan, love him or hate him, was largely a figurehead. He was a professional actor, and that's what he did. His policies were the products of others. His job was to look good on TV.

suddenly the reagan years and administration doesn't seem as horrible as they once did - when compared to this administration.
That said, regardless of how I view him as a president - I do extend condolences to his family - and to the many people in this country who respected him. It's the decent thing to do.

I thought Reagan was a terrible president in his first term.
I couldn't believe he got a second term (boy was I in the minority!) and couldn't wait until it was over.
Then Bush 41 happened, and that was the worst administration ever, even worse then Reagan's.
Then Bush 43 happened, and Reagan/Bush look reasonable in comparison!!

I'm really sorry that he had to die like this.

administration. About how he helped arm Saddam Hussein in the 1980s.
He was no saint.
So glad I don't have cable right now. Will not be watching TV or listening to NPR for awhile. They need to get over eulogizing an evil man before I listen again.
I'm sure shrub and the pugs will urge Americans to stay the course and vote Bush to win one for the "Gipper."
Oy vey! A very evil man died today. He was in his 90s. I don't believe in being a hypocrite by criticizing the man in life and then painting him as a saint in death.

|
He lived a long life, even though the policies his adminstration passed resulted in shortening other people's lives.
I often have wondered if his illness was the result of his karma.
I don't think he really had any idea of what he was doing the majority of time he was in office. It's easy to see he was a puppet and a frontman for the GOP. I also think people give him credit for things he never did, like "winning the Cold War".
His administration pales in comparison to the corruptness of this administration and time has made it harder to hold any animosity toward him.
I do hope he rests in peace and my condolences to his family.
