Regarding Reagan Funeral overkill just remember... |
|
Edited on Wed Jun-09-04 01:33 PM by WI_DEM
This too shall pass. Yes it is nausiating to hear non-stop tributes to someone who most of us realize was a president who actually was more of a figurehead who didn't really know or understand what was happening and who deserved to be impeached for Iran/Contra--which was a much more damaging scandal than Watergate or Monicagate put together. But in two weeks--no, make that a week--people will be over this overkill and concentrating not on the "good old days" under the Gipper but the increasingly polarizing war in Iraq and $2.00 plus per gallon gasoline. Reagan has been fading away in bits and pieces for ten years--has finally made his made his final exit--stage right.

4. funny that if you feel that way |

you even opened this thread? A good bet is if you want to avoid Reagan threads don't open any which mention Reagan in the title. Cheers.

Two weeks from now few people - other than family - will remember he died.
However, I fear that we will be listening to Scott Peterson and Michael Jackson trials all summer rather than the serious issues in Iraq. My big hope is that it is a summer of scandal in DC with the CIA leakgate and Torturegate the big scandals going all the way to B*sh.

5. Today's 24 hour cable news |
|
is very counter-intuitive.
One would think that with so much air time, they could
a) cover a wide variety of news stories from around the world
b) have hour long (or longer) discussions with people of the left, right, and center. Everyone getting in more than 30 seconds to make a point.
c) Have interviews with leading political figures that actually probe into things, asking followup questions.
d) Not cover the same stories as the other 3 24 hour cable news channels.
But what we get is
a) One story at a time, covered to death by all 4 news networks (OK, maybe just 3)
b) No real debate, just sound bites
c) never a follow up question
d) And while covering that ONE story, no real NEWS about it, just endless regurgitation of the same set of facts.
e) A very limited "news cycle"... 24 hours after whatever ceases to be "news", it's gone and forgotten (prison abuse scandal, 9/11 hearings, etc)
I call it the OJ news... news for people who don't think.
CNN when it first started was more the ideal. I remember their international news hour with reports from journalists in foreign countries and thinking "Cool, so this is what the rest of the world thinks is important and what they think of us, what a great perspective!"
