3. Not a Surprise

Especially in light of the terrible nerve damage Dole suffered during the second world war.

The other reason it isn't surprising is because Bob Dole is a statesman, as opposed to the partisan shrimps who currently occupy the Republican "leadership".

Never liked Dole's policies, but at least he's an honorable fellow.

5. he can fight Laura Bush over it

I was just reading that Laura is opposed to stem cell research. My first thought was that the admin put her out in order to counter the image of Nancy - Bush boy opposing stem cell research against the wishes of not just a mourning widow, but Ronald Reagan's widow, would probably not fly well, so they have to counter with a more sympathetic (i.e., female) message. So it's Nancy vs. Laura instead of Nancy vs. Bush.

Am I too cynical?

6. It's silly to try to stop stem cell research

One can only hinder the advancement of science for so long. The idea that the Christian right can stop it from happening is laughable.
