Would You Date a Republican? |
|
I know most of us here are pretty die-hard political and die-hard Democrat. But I know that many people here have some friends who are kinda right of center.
The question is, would you ever DATE someone who was a Republican, even if you liked pretty much everything about them?

Folks, if you meet someone for the first time at a party, bar, friends house etc, and you bring up any of the of facets of politics within the few couple of dates. Take me advice for your own sake please: Give your PC, TV, radio and newspaper subscription to a poor child who can use it for school and learning and don’t buy anymore until you are happy with the relationship aspect of your life. If you are happy alone disregard this advice. I wouldn’t want to screw things up for you.

Application of the latest and most accurate carbon dating techniques to archaeological finds, even those as gruesome as those at the Crawford dig, is essential if we are ever to determine what brought these ponderous yet rapacious beasts to the top of the food chain in the first place.

I'm married. Not sure what I'd do if single.
But I have friends with different views, but they are generally make well reasoned arguements so we can just agree to disagree. I could not respect or be friends with some one who says they like Dubya 'cos he restored honor and decency to the White House.
And I will say this, if you are single, don't have sex with anyone who isn't pro-choice! If they don't support reproductive rights, they have no business having sex outside of marriage.

Look, some of my best friends are Republicans. If a girl was attractive, intelligent, thoughtful, had good taste and a sense of humor, of COURSE I would date her. I would date a person of nearly ANY political persuation (aside from fascism or something) if they were a good person. A Republican is not a frothing, homophobic, undemocratic hateful monster with googly eyes and sixteen guns in their house. They're just average people who happen to hold several opinions on the world of politics which we obviously disagree with. Jeezus Christ you people, get a grip on reality. If J-Lo voted Bush, don't tell me you wouldn't date her in a SECOND. -Max, Long Island. P.S.: You know, there's even the possibility that some people's political affiliations can be changed over time. Reagan was a hardcore Democrat in his youth.

They don't "hold several opinions on the world of politics which we obviously disagree with" - no, they HATE & DISPISE everyone who isn't exactly like them, and will STOP AT NOTHING TO MAKE SURE THEY ALWAYS WIN - by whatever meand possible!
You are simply deluded to think otherwise.
Haven't you been paying attention to all the wonderful, friendly statements all the repuke talking heads and congressmen have been saying?
Haven't you heard about how they don't even TRY to seek ANY Democratic imput? Or even allow them in the room when making decisions anymore?
And I wouldn't even date a rich Log Cabin repuke, either.
You might as well ask us if we'd date a NAZI - opps - they're quickly becomming indestinguishable now!

And she would be lucky to get my great and wonderful liberal self banging her even once.

I can't maintain friendships with Republicans, so dating one would be out of the question. There is only so much of me and my time to go around. I can't waste it on assholes.
Family members are a different story completely, because I love my Republican family, assholes that they are. But I didn't get to pick them. :)

But I'm dating a Republican currently, which is kinda what inspired me to ask, and she's like a Jim Jeffords Republican... I wouldn't be surprised to see her cross the aisle.
But even if she doesn't, her views aren't too extreme for me. She's pro-choice. Pro-gay rights. Anti-Bush. If it were any other way, I wouldn't be able to date her. I disagree with her on some tax issues and she's a little isolationist, but in general not bad for a Republican.

That's a question I ask every time I see them on TV. I figure either they both just LOVE to argue, or politics is forbidden topic at the dinner table and in the bedroom, or Mary is just playing a character on TV and really doesn't believe all of what she says on TV (or maybe James is playing a role, but I doubt it seriously).

I was apolitical when I married my husband. I fell in love with the same qualities that make him a liberal, although I didn't recognize them as such: the concern and affinity for all kinds of underdogs, the innate sense of fairness, the lack of sexism and racism, and his rejection of materialism. These qualities make him a wonderful person to be around, and they would not be present in a Republican.

Politics amongst friends in a not an end game. One can have a heated discussion, take a step back and still remain friends.

If she were merely a pre-Newt Gingrich, pre-hijacking by religious nutcases, unrepentant capitalist Republican, I would consider it.
If she were a neocon, Ashcroftite, Repuke, no way in Hell.

I married one.
He was fairly libertarian when we married, very big on personal freedom and autonomy. Still is. Opposes the drug war, and is having second thoughts on the death penalty. He just votes Republican because the Libertarians are so nutty and fringey. He never met a tax cut he didn't like as long as we have one coming.
We don't talk politics much, he generally stays respectfully silent when I go on about my liberal views, and I go read a book or come here when he watches O'Reilly (with whom he disagrees as often as he agrees). We do watch The McLaughlin Group together and he doesn't mind when I cheer Eleanor Clift on.
I love him dearly. So he's a Republican? The worst thing about it is that he cancels out my votes (but then I cancel out his, so there).

I dated a couple when I was younger and their attitudes were rather...like Bush. Arrogant. Honestly, the differences were just to marked. I am married now. But if I were in the dating market it would be a Democrat or an Independant only.
To me, my parties values are also pretty much my personal values and they strongly differ from the beliefs of the Republican party.

I'm married to a wonderful liberal guy, so I'm answering this hypothetically.
If it was just casual dating, then maybe, but most likely not since politics is my favorite thing to talk about and I wouldn't want to be arguing all of the time. If I was looking to get married, no way in hell. I'm not prejudiced against Republicans. I have a couple Republican friends, but sometimes I cannot stand to be around them. They say some really fucked up shit sometimes. I just cannot imagine being married to someone so with ideals so incompatible with mine.

For people's lives to be totally controlled by their party affiliation is just plain crazy. Girlfirends, friends, business associates, bar buddies; knowing and interacting with these people doesn't involve politics for the most part. And the few times it does I get to hear a different perspective or get shocked when agreed with. It's great.
For those who feel they can only associate with people that think like they do, well I think you're missing out on alot.
I've dated across the spectrum, I just need a Libertarian and Nautral Law party member to complete my collection ;-)

93. I recently went on a date with a guy who |
|
worked for the National (gag) Review (I didn't know him that well, and was trying to be more open about dating). He wore a Young Republican's Button on his lapel, knowing full well that I am a liberal Democrat.
I made a great effort to be on my best behavior and to avoid political discussions, but this guy hammered me at every turn. We ended up in a verbal fist fight on the street - he kept twisting my words around to make me seem like an idiot, bashed Democratic candidates non-stop, and was generally a selfish, boorish clod.
I tried to be civil by saying: "Let's just agree to disagree, we aren't going to change each other's opinion" - numerous times to no avail. I am proud of the fact that I showed remarkable self restraint by not slugging him in the face.
That was our first and last date. Never Again.

I would not date a republican knowingly.. At first, when you start to date, you haven't a clue about their leanings.. I've found that I didn't have enough in common, value-wise, to date a republican. ONE guy I dated and was quite smitten with.. well, I had no idea what his political affiliation was at the time. Years later, I ran into him.. and he was a raging republican. Wierd. I never knew!

I draw the line at FRIENDS who are Republican. And even at that it is getting hard to keep any respect for people who support this immoral war.
I am married, and if either of us woke up one day a freeper, it'd be grounds for divorce. Or at least separation until the other came to their frigging senses.
Oh and my best friend is VERY liberal and one of her first litmus tests before she'll go out with a guy are his socio-political point of views.
It is VERY important because I think it indicates your character.

Many family members who are Republican, and I still love and respect them all...just not their political orientations.
However, when it comes to dating, I think that requires an intimate understanding and common ground not required by friends or even family. For that reason, I don't think I could date a Republican. For her to be that, it would mean she is either:
A) Completely uninformed, in which case her ignorance and apathy would make her too unattractive to date
Or
B) She buys into what the Republicans are currently doing, in which case, I don't think I could date someone knowing that aspect of her character.

I was married to a Republican once. Met him when I was still in high school and at a time when we weren't thinking quite the way we do now. As it turned out, the lack of shared values made it impossible to survive bad times and the marriage only lasted a few years. I've been married to a Democrat for 27 years this week and our shared worldview and personal value system has gotten us through all kinds of rough times. I have no problem with mixing it up, but in areas that matter to you, I think it's best to be with someone who's similar. That's why I don't get things like Matalin and Carville. The areas on which they disagree are so basic to what's right and wrong, I don't see how they can get along or respect each other.
