Fake DNC Boston Convention Site! * FYI *
Edited on Fri Jun-11-04 11:25 AM by mzmolly
Alert from a Yahoo Group I have a membership in:

An individual named Joe Sano is using the URL
http://www.2004dnc.com/ ostensibly to promote Boston
businesses to convention delegates.

It is NOT the official Democratic Convention site. In
fact it seems (intentionally... or not) biased toward
Pres. Bush and sections of the site are quite
confusing (esp. the "Democratic Candidates" page which
also lists Bush and Nader as #1 and #2).

The two MAIN problems however are (1) that this
"poser" site has so many links to it that it Googles
above the real site (so if we begin linking to the
real site across the Net it will help) and (2) news
sources are linking to this site instead of the
official Democratic Convention site!

The site is also biased.

http://www.wurfwhile.com/archives/000122.html

The fake site is as follows:

http://www.2004dnc.com/

THE REAL DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION SITE is:

http://www.dems2004.org

Many media outlets are incorrectly linking the 'fake' site!!! If you note this happening please notify them.

Thanks to - DemocraticWings yahoogroup - for the info.

* Bostonians, you may want to contact your local media? *

3. There's a disclaimer at the bottom, but it's SMALL...
*This website is not the official website of the 2004 Democratic National Convention and is neither affiliated with nor endorsed by the 2004 Democratic National Convention Committee, Inc., the Democratic National Committee, Inc., Boston 2004, Inc., or Boston 2004 Host Committee, Inc.

Please Note: The Democratic Convention Guide Boston 2004 included the disclaimer above at the request of the 2004 Democratic National Convention Committee, Inc., the Democratic National Committee, Inc., Boston 2004, Inc., and the Boston 2004 Host Committee, Inc., and is in full compliance with its guidelines.

But you've got to really look for it!!!

8. ACTION: There are several steps to be taken here if you choose to do so.
More from the email:

There are several steps to be taken here if you choose
to do so. They do not need to be completed at the same
time1so1pace yourself.

THE REAL DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION SITE is at
http://www.dems2004.org -- please refer to it in your
letters.

The following media outlets are incorrectly linking to
the "poser" site which is mainly an advertorial
website (not really much need to advise them of the
apparent bias, just let them know they've linked to an
unofficial, unaffiliated site). Ask them to redirect
their links to the official site at www.dems2004.org

1. Houston Chronicle:
http://www.chron.com/content/chronicle/electioncentral/2004/index.html

This is an Election Information page. The link to the
unofficial, unaffiliated site is under the "Calendar"
section at lower right. The GOP convention link goes
to the official GOP Convention website.

The real Democratic URL is www.dems2004.org

Write them at: online@chron.com
and cc: James T. Campbell, Ombudsman,
readerrep@chron.com

2. The Oregonian's online affiliate "OregonLive":
http://www.oregonlive.com/elections/

This is an Election Information page. The link to the
unofficial, unaffiliated site is under "The
Candidates" section in left-hand column. The GOP
convention is not linked.

The real Democratic URL is www.dems2004.org

Write them at: webmaster@oregonlive.com (not verified)
and cc: Peter Bhatia, Executive Editor,
pbhatia@news.oregonian.com

3. The Economist:
http://www.economist.com/World/na/displayStory.cfm?story_id=2598856

This is an April 15, 2004 article about the Democratic
Convention. A link to the unofficial, unaffiliated
website appears in "Websites" under the "Related
Items" box at middle right. The GOP convention is not
linked.

The real Democratic URL is www.dems2004.org

Write them at:
http://www.economist.com/help/contact.cfm
and click the button for "Reporting a fault on the
site"
and cc: Bill Emmott, Editor, by fax at +44 (0) 20 7839
2968

4. University of Connecticut's Roper Center for Public
Opinion Research:
http://www.ropercenter.uconn.edu/elect_2004/conventions.html

This is an Election Information page. The link to the
unofficial, unaffiliated site is third from the top in
the list at top-center of page. All the other
political parties' links go to official convention
websites.

The real Democratic URL is www.dems2004.org

Write them at: rcweb@ropercenter.uconn.edu
Or call: (860) 486-4440
cc: Richard Rockwell, Executive Director,
richard@ropercenter.uconn.edu

5. WCVB-TV Channel 5 Boston:
http://www.thebostonchannel.com/politics/2352813/detail.html

This is a July 23, 2003 story about planning the
convention. The links to the unofficial, unaffiliated
site is in the "Resources" box at top left.

Within this box, the link named "Candidates" goes to
the unofficial, unaffiliated site's list of candidates
which include Republican George Bush, independent
Ralph Nader, Democrats that have dropped out and a
Democrat that never ran (Sen. Hillary Clinton). The
link named "Boston 2004" goes directly to the
unofficial, unaffiliated site. The link named
"Democratic Natoinal Convention" goes to the
Democratic Party's official website (not the official
convention website). The official GOP equivalents are
not linked.

The real Democratic URL is www.dems2004.org

9. Contacted another one -
Here's the message I sent to Jeff Jacoby (conservative Boston Globe columnist) via the townhall.com web site:

You cited http://www.2004dnc.com as the Democratic National Convention's "unofficial" web site. In fact, it is a FAKE web site designed to fool visitors into thinking it has a legitimate connection to the Democratic Party's national convention.

As stated at the bottom of this fake web site's home page, "This website is not the official website of the 2004 Democratic National Convention and is neither affiliated with nor endorsed by the 2004 Democratic National Convention Committee, Inc., the Democratic National Committee, Inc., Boston 2004, Inc., or Boston 2004 Host Committee, Inc.

"Please Note: The Democratic Convention Guide Boston 2004 included the disclaimer above at the request of the 2004 Democratic National Convention Committee, Inc., the Democratic National Committee, Inc., Boston 2004, Inc., and the Boston 2004 Host Committee, Inc., and is in full compliance with its guidelines."

Obviously they added this text after legal challenges from the organizations mentioned. Please inform your readers that www.2004dnc.com is not an "unofficial" DNC convention site, but rather a fake one.
