What would you tell this engineering major who just graduated from Vandy??
Edited on Fri Jun-11-04 04:36 PM by jdsmith
He says: "I thought the sacrifices of engineering (to anyone who
never majored in it: bitchy-hard classes with no (attractive) women in them and huge amounts of work) were to make huge amounts of money upon graduation. If that's not true, then art history, here I come!"

He went to a pretty good school--Vandy--but he seems to be a little short on tact, huh?

11. Thanks for understanding WHO, Molly
Bonus from the little scofflaw, who has left tracks all over the web:

"I'm pretty sure my V1 saved me from laser last Friday in a north GA
speed trap. I got the alert and got down under the speed limit really
quickly (faster than average reflexes), and the laser alert kept oing the whole time. I was hit twice more before I even saw the cop (he was off on the left shoulder and it was dusk). I was out in front after just passing a cluster of cars so I don't know who else he could have been hitting; my guess is the gun wouldn't lock in a constant speed because I was decelerating, and by the time it did I was legal.

Anyway, I think all V1s can be upgraded to the latest specs (mine was bought new 7-2000), but I think the major upgrades can cost something like $250 so that plus your reasonable price may end up equalling the cost of a new unit."

3. I'd say.. Enjoy art history
You have about the same chances of getting a job in it as Engineering these days.

5. What a dork
I made the "sacrifices of engineering" - still do - and have had a great time with it for 26 years. If you don't enjoy engineering work, it's definitely a good field to avoid, because it IS a lot of work.

The thing about there being no attractive women in it is bullshit, too, but again it's a matter of preference - if you don't like the sort of women you meet in the engineering department, stay away from it.

With an attitude like that I'd think art history was a bad fit for this guy too - no money in it, and the women there probably won't have time for a shallow buffoon, whether he thinks they're attractive or not.

So what would I tell him? "Stop being such a shallow prick."

7. I mean, he HAS put his degree to good use, I guess
The boy just LOVES to drive, and, as you'll see, he came up with an excellent solution to the problems of micturation:

"This past November I did Atlanta to Galveston and back (different route, but same direction, state, and about the same distance), and IIRC it took me 10 or 11 hours. I had breakfast before leaving, stopped once for gas, another time for gas and lunch (McD's; went
through the drive-through after getting gas and ate while on the road), and arrived in Galveston by dinnertime (if you don't mind eating late). This requires a light intake of fluids so you can time bathroom breaks to coincide with fuel stops (I actually tried to rig up a catheter connected to an empty water bottle, but it was "impractical" for on-road use), but with lots of good CDs it's some nice time to yourself.

13. I have a bunch of engineers in my family -
husband, three nephews and a son currently in college - and they are all gainfully employed and never been laid off. Work gets light occasionally but so far so good. My niece just graduated with a math major (changed from engineering from math) and she has been looking for a job for a year. I kept telling her not to drop the engineering degree... Hubby says they are always looking for women engineers.

My nephew went to Georgia Tech (really hated that school) for undergrad and said the female engineering students all fit the stereotype. They used to cruise Emory for women.
