should Lou Dobbs be put on the religious nut list? |
|
on his show last nite, in a really smarmy voice, wondered aloud: is it so bad to have kids say "under god" in the pledge, considering all the so-much-worse things that go on in their schools every day?
here's a kick in the shin Lou

Dobbs, by the way, proudly says "I've been a Republican all my life".
Are you one of the Democrats who thinks "under god" should remain in the pledge? If so, how is this not a violation of Article One of the Bill of Rights? A phrase like that is official endorsement that such a thing exists; remember, the issue is not establishment of a particular religion, but the concept of religion itself.

Do you think that everyone who suggests this is a non issue is a religious nut?
But don't let me rain on your anti religious burning at the stake.

4. One comment about one issue does not make one a fanatic |
|
He expressed his opinion, briefly. I know a lot of people who aren't particularly religious or superstitious who support "under God" being in the pledge. I personally don't care, as I don't say the pledge because Jesus said not to take oaths (Matthew 5:33-37). I love to quote this to patriotic fundamentalists.

7. Lou Dobbs has made an invalid analogy. |
|
Children are not forced to recite those "so much worse" things.
I think the Dobbster is trying to hint that religion can supplant those "so much worse" things. Message to Louie: parents can accomplish that, too.

... I find the "under god" thing to be about number 99 on my top 100 list of problems in this country.
It is a small compromise I'm willing to make, especially since nobody has to actually say it - you can always just go silent for those 2 words.
Yes, there is a principle involved, but there is also pragmatism. Should "we" ever actually get those 2 words removed, the political price will be far in excess of any benefit.
Lou is ok by me.

I am religious and I belong to several organization which fight FOR the separation of church and state. I don't care if they take under God Out of the pledge. But I think for most people it is simply a non issue.
I do not say the pledge because I don't do loyalty oaths.

what he was saying was the amount of attention being payed and resources being expended by both sides of this issue are way out of proportion to what kids are really in need of in schools.
the smarmy voice was to emphasize that this issue, at it's core, is pretty inane, whether you're a Jesus freak or not.

What the heck is your avatar? I'm tired, not getting much sleep; however, it looks like an Ostrich or some bird riding a bike. Was just wondering because I cannot be sure what it is. If it is an Ostrich riding a bicycle, what does that represent?
And just to make it clear to everyone . . .I do not do drugs NOR do I drink (just wanted to be clear on that). I'm just tired.

17. Hey--I happen to agree with him. |
|
I think having "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance is really a non-issue. It's not like, say, trying to post the Ten Commandments on public property.
I'm not a religious nut (I'm not a Christian at all, as a matter of fact), but the country was founded by Christians who thought that God played a part in the founding of the country. So it could be construed that "under God" in the pledge is merely acknowledging that the country was formed "under God," according to the founding fathers (which it was), and not a declaration that we all must think the country exists "under God."
But no matter how it is construed, Ijust don't think it's a big enough deal to make an issue out of it. The battles should be confined to those matters that truly cross the separation of church and state line.

There are atheists that take that attitude. Religious fanaticism may be a problem but we can't go around imagining its behind every singple pronouncement that does not blast god into oblivion. God is not a big deal for some people. Whether they believe or not.

19. I watch Lou Dobbs every night. I must not have |
|
been paying attention when he said that. Lou's show has been the only show to try to get corporations to stay in the U.S. and if they do not, do not give them big benefits if they do.
I agree with what he said in your post to a certain extent. It seems petty to me. I think we have more important issues to worry about right now . . . like getting our troops home, getting a Dem in the White House as well as getting more Dems in the Congress. Saying "One nation, under God" to me is not specifying any God. Now if it said "One Nation under our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ," that would be specifically a Christian God. That should NOT be allowed because there are more than Christians that pledge to the Flag of the U.S. And as always, anyone that does not want to say it doesn't have to.
The Senate, Congress, Supreme Court all start out with a prayer to God. Not a specific God, but to everyone who believes there is a God and, again, those who do not want to pray along do not have to. Also, are we going to remove from our money "In God We Trust?"
That's just my opinion. Lou Dobbs does appear to lean to the left more than the right with his comments.

30. What about all the other patrotic material? |
|
Ok remove "Under God" and also remove "Indivisible" Seems we are divided. Next take off "In God We Trust" On the money and replace it with "In nothing we trust" Oh and also "God Bless America" Needs to be changed to "Who cares about America?"By the end of this we will have nothing left to believe in not even a country. But hey Why stop ther lets petition to have all the churches remove their signs out in front of the buildings so non-believers don't have to see the names and how about the crosses lets rip those down too seeing as how its a symbol of the christian religion. How about banning the printing of the bible so non-believers don't have to see copies of it in their favorite book stores. and if that don't work we can always outlaw the religion all together lets have our own "Holy War" right here!!!! Wouldn't that be great!!! NO MORE CHRISTIANS WHOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!! Lets make'em hide in back allies and dark places to do that stuff. we don't wanna see that crap or even know it exsist!! What a Joke!! Forgive them father for they know not what they do I really have to agree with him there are more pressing issues than this that really need to be fixed before this gets out of hand.
