This morning I saw Bob Dole say the following on CNN:
I think {John Kerry giving up his Senate seat} would be a message to the American people. They didn't get my message, that I was willing to give up something, but it might be something John would want to consider.
I thought about how interesting it was for Mr. Dole to say this, considering he was roundly defeated by incumbent President Clinton in 1996 and did not have a job to go back to because he gave up his position to run on the Republican ticket. One might view that as a mistake on Dole's part, unless one considers appearing in TV commercials for Viagra and Pepsi a step up from Senate Majority Leader. As Mr. Dole points out, the public did not care that he resigned from the Senate. So why would anyone care if John Kerry did the same.
Perhaps the public would care if Senator Kerry did resign because of the poor treatment he has been given recently by the Republican leaders of the state he representatives. Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healy are currently leading a chorus of Republican lawmakers in crying out for Senator Kerry's resignation. Healy notes that Kerry has missed 87% of the votes in the Senate this year, adding that, "If any of us attended our job only 13 percent of the time, we'd be fired."
Naturally, the administration echoes the calls of Romney and Healy.
"I'm sure that the Romney administration feels the people of Massachusetts deserve more than just one senator representing them in the U.S. Senate," says Bush campaign spokesman Kevin Madden.
Back in 1998, George W. Bush was in his second term as Governor of Texas. You might not have realized that, if you were a Texas citizen, because Bush had already begun his campaign for the White House. Over the next two years, Bush was barely visible as the head of state, becoming increasingly absent from his office, and leaving his Lt. Governor, Rick Perry, at the helm. And yet, Bush held onto the title of Governor until he had won the Presidential contest.
Now, George W. Bush is President and fighting for reelection. It appears, from the news, that Bush is using every opportunity to try to drum up support for his reelection, even going so far as to petition the Pope to urge his American bishops to push the far-right agenda harder. His public speeches, which are often just stump speeches in disguise, are widely televised. He is allowed access to a government-owned jet to fly around the country for free. George W. Bush is neglecting his duties as commander-in-chief and abusing the system to get reelected.
I say we should urge President Bush to resign so he can focus on his campaign and leave the running of the country to a full-time president. After all, tit for tat.
