SPRINGFIELD - State Republican leaders acknowledged Thursday they must do a better job of appealing to suburban voters if they hope to regain any power in Illinois politics.

"The one thing Republicans have to do is register more people to vote in the Republican areas of this state. And the Republican areas of the state are downstate Illinois and the suburbs," said U.S. Sen. Peter Fitzgerald, an Inverness Republican.

Fitzgerald offered his advice during a subdued Republican Day at the Illinois State Fair. After decades of controlling the governor's office, Illinois Republicans are left with only the treasurer's office and have been reduced to minority status in the Illinois House, Senate, and state Supreme Court.

The turnout Thursday was sparse compared to the busloads of supporters who'd packed past events. No formal rally was planned, and the entire event lasted only a couple of hours. Even the red, white and blue elephant balloon outside the Illinois Republican Party's tent at the State Fair was having a hard time staying aloft.

Man, I am so glad to live in Illinois. The Cubs, the Sox and the best Senator in the country, Dick Durbin. Come to Illinois...one and all. We are Democrat friendly.

2. I didn't think there were any Republicans left in Illinois to have a tent
Most are either in jail already or will soon to be in there.

3. Durbin is the party's best kept secret
God bless Chicago. I don't know how I'd survive in a GOP stronghold.
