OK, let's make some generalizations about the North.... |
|
#1. Seems like the operators of the electrical grid, perhaps particularly those portions around Lake Erie, are less competent than the operators of electrical grids in the South, where summer temperatures go above 90F every year, and at times are expected to exceed 100F. Every year the Southeast U.S. experiences afternoon peak power demands that are occasioned by the near-universal use of air-conditioning and the every-year occurrence of 95+F temperatures! The infrastructure down here has been planned for these occurrences. The TVA is a big part of that planning. By the way, a Democrat, Franklin Delano Roosevelt along with Harold Ickes, planned the TVA.
Since we're still embroiled in South-bashing threads, I thought that it might be time to have a cozy little thread about Northern incompetence, especially at a time when the lights are on and the computers are running in Dixie, but not up North. Mmmm-kay?!
#2. It's usually Northerners that make assumptions about the South, and not vice versa. I'm one of the unusual ones who has dared to make turnabout into fair play.

|
I luv Philly cheesesteak! It's delicious. I also luv a NY-style pizza!!!!!
But lemme tell ya....New Englanders can't make a pizza if their life depended on it!
And, it's not the NewYawkers or the folks in Philly who are the problem either. I've had the most problems from the blue-blood Yankees in New England...Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine, Vermont etc.

I'm a YANKEE from New England. Actually, an Irish Catholic one. Do you have problems with us Irish too?
'New Englanders can't make a pizza if their life depended on it!' The second largest Italian population next to NY Metro is in Boston and I don't know where you've eaten pizza but there are many places in Boston and Providence that are as good as NYC.
You obviously haven't REALLY seen New England or lived here to be a judge. Your comments about the region's prejudice a few days ago really show the depths of your own.

2. here's the first little generalization |
|
...Northerners like to criticize things without offering constructive solutions to the problem. If the problem involves spending actual money on fixing infrastructure, Northerners would rather have their names posted in all the 'politically correct' places and be seen with all the 'glitterati' and celebrities, rather than actually fix things.
Example in point: The celebrities who are trying to shut down wind power off the coast of Massachusetts. Wind power!!!!!

I'm not interested in bashing the South; I have no beef with either the South or Southerners. I live in New England and I love it here, but I'd love to move to the deep South at some point. Actually, I'd love to live in Savannah, GA specifically.
My only point was that the original shit-stirrer was not what I would call a Northerner, that's all.

as an unreconstructed Yankee from the great state of Illinois, I'll say that in the South, license plates only have to go on the back of the car and they cost a lot less. Property taxes are really low (but then so is the quality of education-you get what you pay for).
Personally, I'll say that there's good and bad in every region.
PS-I now live in AR

6. Two words: Superiority Complex |
|
OK, two more: intellectual elitism.
As in, we're so superior that we don't need anybody else in the country to vote for us. We don't need no crummy Southerners, or Westerners, or whatever.
I'm really sorry. I've traveled all over the country, and I love every place I've been (although Hartford, CT was prety boring, OK?). I'm still trying to calm down from the South-bashing going on earlier. My daughter is in college in NYC, and I'm not gonna bash NY or anybody else. I will say that a drive on the PA turnpike from the southwest corner to the NE corner is pretty doggone LONG, but hey, it's still beautiful country.

The only real competitive state in the South was Florida and it's half Yankee. Take away Dixie and Gore won a huge landslide in 2000.

but generalizations get you nowhere. I'm very, very southern, and I did not, repeat, DID NOT vote for George W. Bush. There are democratic voters in every state of the union, as there are republican voters in every state. What goes here, we don't have enough fighting between dems and pugs. Ya'll wanna duke it out? Haven't you had enough of the "cowboy" mentality? For God's sake, save your energy to fight the enemy, you know, the neo-cons, or better, the cheap labor conservatives.

23. The Dem elites left the South; it didn't leave them |
|
They're unwilling to play on an level with the GOP. The only way to fight back is to wage class war as equals the the GOP playing the race card.
But the DNC et al in their wisdom have decided that the south is a lost cause. They in fact encourage the worst aspects of the South by refusing to compete there.
That leaves the field to 1) John Breaux Democrats. You could do worse (and maybe he's a bad example, because he's straight of the Edwin Edwards school of practical, mildly corrupt government. And because I used to work for him, so I give him the benefit of the doubt). 2) Zell Miller Democrats. I don't know where these guys come from. Out from under rocks. They run as Democrats because it is perhaps politically convenient, but they are Republicans at the core.
It comes down to one of the old truisms of the War Between the States. Notherners are cowards who will run from a fair fight.
Instead of comforteningly repeating how hopelessly backwards and unsuitable the south is, why are you down there doing something about it?

Let's try stepping into at least the 20th century, Northerners. I live in the Southwest and I've never eve seen a home that's heated with oil. Congrats to all the Northerners for making the oil companies filthy rich by being hooked on their liquid narcotic.

There are a myriad of other methods. Electric. Natural gas. Geothermal. Solar. Heating oil is outdated. I will concede it is costly to integrate a new system, however.

I've lived most of my life in VA, but also for various amounts of time in DC, MI, OH, LA, AL, VT, and now live in NC. With siblings in MA, MD, and ID. One can't generalize. Virginia is more like Pennsylvania than it is like Texas. Pennsylvania is more like Virginia than it is like Maine or Minnesota.
I've traveled everywhere in between and out West too. And never once felt hated as a Virginian. But from reading DU for the past year, and especially the past day, I'm feeling so overwhelmingly hated for being a Southerner that it makes no difference that I'm a Southerner with Unionist family history and an interracial background. I'm ready to give up, crawl in a hole, and avoid Yankees for the rest of my life.
How many of you hate us, anyway? I used to think it was next to none; lately I feel like it's almost all.
