US Flag Code: Does anyone else follow it or is it just me?
http://www.bcpl.net/~etowner/flagcode.html

Ive followed the flag code for years and Im sickened and amazed that 'real murikans' drive around with flags on their SUV's, trucks and vehicles, Shrub writing all over them, etc.

Take a few minutes, read over the above code and see if you can spot where other 'real murikans' are trashing the flag code.

8. Whoa!
Chimpy's desecrating the flag. You don't autograph Old Glory, no matter how small.

The longer bu$h is around, the more people seem to care less.... or something like that.

There seem to be a lot of ratty flags around lately

4. Funny you should post this today!
The accompanying photo for today's DU article titled, "For the Love of Freedom" made me wonder the same thing. That flag definitely needs to be retired.

The link below has a photo of Bush signing an American flag. Also one of Kid Rock wearing one & then tells how he flung it off after his show.

What passes for patriotism these days is truly amazing!

is clothes made out of the flag. Or maybe to sell refrigerators. Or lapel pins. Three things I don't like.

10. Thank you! PLEASE make people listen to your point of view!
You do not write on the flag. You do not tape it to your SUV's radio antenna to be ripped to shreds. You do not make it into clothing. You DO NOT drape it over the cross at church. And most of all, you do not brandish it as a weapon in the crappy little culture war you helped start.

11. Today, I saw flags
soaking wet in the rain, looking dirty and bedraggled. This includes the Federal Courthouse. Sort of like the Bush Administration, I thought-they talk a lot about loving this country but show no respect.

12. so I can wear a flag T shirt as long as it has no writing on it?
Edited on Tue Jun-22-04 07:21 PM by AZDemDist6
I'm serious, I bought a bunch of "patriotic" shirts to canvass the neighborhood in and want to be sure I'm OK (hate to have some freeper catch me in doing a bad thing)

thanks---- FYI this is my favorite "patriotic" shirt

17. Might consider a different shirt :-)
Is it okay to have a flag t-shirt with words written on it?

No, the flag should never be worn and no, the flag should never have marks or words written upon it. Section 8d (see below): "The flag should never be used as wearing apparel." Section 8g: "The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature."

21. drat that's my fav <sigh>
but thanks for the education, the flag has been such a part of the landscape for clothes since the 70's it's hard to get my head around it. I'll try to be more aware in the future (hey it's been decades since I burned one, does that count?) JUST KIDDING!

24. but nobody is wearing "the flag"
in this case... only a shirt with a replica of the flag printed on it. This surely can't be against the code. I mean where would it end? Think of all the places you see "replica's of the American flag.

13. I'm not into flag worship...
but the hypocrisy of people who drive around with "God Bless America" stickers all over their car while there's a ratty flag tied to their antenna piss me off a lot.

14. I've printed hundreds of copies of the Flag Code
and put it in my neighbors' mail boxes. My nephew asked me why I don't display a flag: I told him that it was too much work, and then gave him a copy of the code.

15. Great idea!
I've seen so many tired/soiled/tattered flags. Not my neighbor, though. Has replaced his flag twice since 9/11, has a light on it when it's out & night & never has it out in bad weather.

16. rude
I believe phrasing of your question does not follow the guidelines against rudeness. I'm referring to the 'real murikans' comment.
I just reread the guidelines and they say the following.
"Treat people with respect. Don't be rude or bigoted."
"Do not post racist, sexist, homophobic, ethnic, anti-religious, or anti-atheist bigotry."

Name calling or mocking a regional accent is bigoted.
This behavior toward someone who has less education than you is bigoted. (and un-democratic - both meanings)
This behavior toward someone who has a regional accent is even worse bigotry. (and also especially un-democratic - both meanings)

If they don't get the code teach them. You won't see one on my SUV or lapel and I'm a bit more patriotic than most. You see I've "defended the flag" both by following the code you cite and the other way that's usually meant.

19. 'real murikans' is not a swipe at the ignorant....
Its a take on the fact that these people believe themselves to be far more "America Loving" than the lowly leftist, yet they choose to display the flag in ways that are inappropriate.

The more flags you display, the more patriotic you are, you see.

The more flags you display, the more 'merikun you are. If you display more flags than your neighbor, then you are certainly more 'merikun than him.

Its tongue in cheek. BTW, welcome to DU. I hope you stick around and read a bit.

23. FYI the rudeness guidelines are regarding a personal remark
not a general comment ie

'real merikins' is not directed at any one in particular.

Now if he said "That Thinker dude thinks he's the only 'real merikin' around here" THAT would be rude :9
