Anecdotal comment on "Iraq Handover" from friend. |
|
She is usually a consistent newspaper reader, but with chasing a 2-year old all day, some things get overlooked:
Today we were doing our usual Bush-bashing and the subject of June 30 came up, etc. Not sure how we got to topic but I commented about how it won't matter much, since our soldiers will still be there and will still be targets.
Her reaction: "What? What are you talking about?" Me: "Well, I think a lot of Americans are under the misconception that our soldiers are coming home after the handover."
Her: "Well, count me as one of those, since that's what I thought too. You mean they're NOT coming home after this June 30 thing?"
ME: "Last I heard, we're there thru 2005 or maybe forever, for all I know."
Her: "Then we are so screwed. I can't believe I didn't know that."
And I consider her a generally informed person, so I can only imagine how many others are assuming the same thing.
Just thought I'd share.

Sit back and watch the dawning on some folks faces. It seems difficult to imagine she did not know this but if she did not I would guess a great many do not know this.

I hope a lot of people believe that.
Don't these morans ever think about the consequences of their actions? They keep up support of the war by telling the public it will be over June 30th. Don't they think what will happen after june 30th when americans still get killed?

Which is I why I posted it. There had been discussions about the possibility that a lot of the public weren't cluing in that "Countdown to Handover" did not mean "Countdown to troops coming home".
Now, in defense of my friend, she is not the run of the mill dumbass who doesn't pay attention. She really tries to stay informed. But does she spend as much time as I do reading up on all of this? No, and knowing how her life is some days, I'm surprised she gets time to read the paper. And to her credit, she calls me alot to say "Hey, do you know more about "blah blah blah".
She is also the recipient of a lot of right-wing crap from her mother in law which she sends to me for rebuttal.
She's one of the good ones.
So, I wasn't saying this to set my friend up for bashing but it did strike me as a good example of what a lot of folks may be miscontruing in all of the talk of the June 30th Handover.
