The time is past when good men can remain silent |
|
An important moment in anti-war history: "Our apologies, good friends, for the fracture of good order, the burning of paper instead of children, the angering of the orderlies in the front parlor of the charnel house. We say: killing is disorder, life and gentleness and community and unselfishness is the only order we recognize. The time is past when good men can remain silent, when obedience can segregate men from public risk, when the poor can die without defense. How many must die before our voices are heard? How many must be tortured, dislocated, starved, maddened? How long must the world's resources be raped in the service of legalized murder? When, at what point, will you say no to this war?" --Father Philip Berrigan, May 1968 http://www.damien-hs.edu/babbitt/Essays/The%20Demand%20for%20Social%20Justice%20in%20The%20Trial%20of%20the%20Catonsville%20Nine.htmor http://tinyurl.com/2t6vbAlso see: http://www.internationalanswer.org/berrigan/mumia.html

2. Indeed, Kanary, and it isn't just "war" -- as in 'the declaration of' |
|
What we must oppose now is not only war but THOSE SYSTEMS OF POWER WHICH PROFIT FROM IT.
War will end when it is no longer profitable to wage.

3. Where to begin? What's the first step? |
|
That's one huge dragon to slay......start at the head, or the tail? It's fiery breath will try to stop us, but we must find a way.
Isn't it ironic that those words you quote are from Catholic priests, and now it's the Catholic hierarchy that are urging people to ote for the warmongers??
What a mess.......

7. That's the really frustrating part, eh Kanary? |
|
One often tires of being called a crackpot or being told "Oh you're too far ahead of the mainstream." It is scant comfort when approached by someone who has the eier to admit, "You said that to me so clearly so long ago, seems you were were right." Well, yeah , great... do you see where we all are now? Heads up for the next incoming round. Can you check it out for youself and BACK ME UP this time rather than sitting by as everyone attacks the messenger? :argh: :SIGH: I DO HEAR YOU, dear Kanary. :loveya:

13. Thanks! Your words are a balm, and mean soooo much! |
|
We're constantly exhorted to "speak up", etc, yet so seldom given the support to do just that. Unless/until the "movement" gets *that* part of it, we will continue as we have..... burning out and fading away............
Well, you got me doing something I very *rarely* do...... I'm in tears........ Understanding and support does that to me.....
bouquets to ya........
and  back to ya....

6. It soon became clear to Krugman that |
|
one should regard America's right-wing movement - which now in effect controls the administration, both houses of Congress, much of the judiciary, and a good slice of the media - as a revolutionary power in Kissinger's sense. That is, a movement whose leaders do not accept the legitimacy of our current political system
The game has CHANGED, my dearest kid-units, can you spell the word fascists?

9. We can draw a CLEAR uninterrupted line |

from the Third Reich to the current U.S. "regime." They are Mussolini, Hitler, Franco, Amin, Pinochet and a bag o' human bone chips in a blender with a dash of UNLIMITED STOLEN MONEY and a pinch of OUT OF CONTROL TECHNOLOGY. EEEEEEEEKKKKK!!!

12. The Belly of the Beast |
|
Unfortunately I'm at work and have limited reply time.
I read a quote from MLK just recently about how everyone must protest in the way he or she can. We are in the belly of this beast and if we were to be educated so that all understood the nature of the beast and our role in it, we could put ourselves against the machinery, as Mario Savio called, and "prevent it from working at all."
I believe that is possible -- not easty or even likely, but possible. We must keep at it by all means available. For me, educating the young who now have more at stake than do those like myself who have lived long and hard, is also an important step. I am fortunate to be surrounded by young people who are earnest, sincere and energetic.
Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread and to the long struggle for real peace.

Tine for all of us to re-read General Smedley Butler's speech from 1933. Do a google on his name for the text of the speech. He said what you are saying. Take the profit out of war and we will stop having wars. He was a marine's marine.

That fucking milquetoast wimp.
We need two of Nancy Pelosi, one for House, one for Senate.
