BILL ROY: CONSERVATIVES HAD REALLY BAD WEEK


It was a bad week for conservatives -- so bad George W. Bush may get the sympathy vote.

Vice President Dick Cheney went to the Senate floor to tell Sen. Pat Leahy, D-Vt., to do the anatomically impossible. When asked on Fox News if he said it, Cheney flashed his half-smile and said he doesn't "usually" use that word. The operative word is "usually."

Wealthy Illinois Senate candidate Jack Ryan, who had told voters there was nothing damaging in his divorce papers, dropped out of a race he was losing anyway. Seems his wife testified he took her to sex clubs and pressured her to perform sex acts with him while strangers watched.

This popped Ryan to the top of the list of family value Republicans who have had to retreat from sanctimonious statements and positions (political, not sexual) --such as adulterers Newt Gingrich and Bob Livingston from speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

And, oh, yes, Ronald Reagan Jr. told Larry King on CNN that he would vote for "whoever the viable candidate is who can defeat George W. Bush."
