2. It won't work because...
we have had four years of "do as we say do, not as we do."

And you are seeing it here.

You think laid off factory workers (for example) are going to say "Edwards was a trial lawyer..." or will they instead focus on the positive energy of the Kerry-Edwards ticket?

4. Edwards fought for the little guy
He is the type of lawyer that the average guy can appreciate. He is not one of these high paid corporate whore lawyers fighting to screw you and me. His story resonates very well as evidenced by how well he did in the primaries, especially since he is relatively new to national politics.

5. devil's advocate...
the only problem with your argument is that they're going to say "Not all attorneys are bad," but Edwards was a trial lawyer (cue the eery music)...

I don't agree with them but they'd say the Corporate attorneys like those good Republicans are good folks and that Edwards and his trial lawyer buddies leach off the system...

I'm with you on this... I'm definately Kerry/Edwards 2004, but I see how they'd try to needle your argument.

6. Lincoln??
Wasn't the so-called Father of the Republican party, Abraham Lincoln, also a trial lawyer? Should we dig up his dead body and drive a stake through his heart to make sure he's really dead?

7. Lincoln's Casket Is Buried In Concrete
They were worried that Lincoln's body might be stolen and held for ransom. Interesting fact.

8. Interesting Fact
Lincoln's casket is actually buried in concrete. They were worried that someone would try to steal his body and hold it for ransom.

9. I'm Glad He's Safe
Any buried trial lawyer is in danger of being dug up and staked like a blood-sucking vampire. At least that's how they're all portrayed. Like any profession, I'm sure they're made up of the honorable and the not-so honorable.

14. Two of the "lawyer jokes" that have stuck in my mind:
Why don't lawyers sunbathe on the sand? Because cats come and cover them up.
Why would you find a lawyer buried up to his neck? Because people did not find enough dirt to cover his head.

They DO inspire a lot of animosity, but when we need one we change our tune pretty fast...

10. I'm sort of curious how this hatred of trial lawyers came about
Is it really the "no brainer" that the pundits act like it is? Usually, most people that I know are jack happy to sue if something happens to them -- Republican or Dem -- and this whole two-step processing of "the trial lawyers drive up health care costs, bankrupt businesses, etc." seems just a shade too complex for your average
Forrest Gump to parse. It's not like Clinton's undershorts or Seven of Nine blowing her husband in public -- it doesn't seem like that salient of an issue, where everyone would have this "fierce hatred" of trial lawyers...

Any help for me on this one?

12. It's a right-wing "meme". It's from the Newt Gingrich vocabulary
that uses "liberal" as a bad word.

"Trial lawyer", spoken with the right amount of disgust in one's tone of voice, is used by the right-wing to protect the corporate crooks so that ordinary people think the "trial lawyers" are bad and the corporations are good.

11. Trial lawyers don't issue the verdicts
Ordinary Americans do. Polls show tort reform is a loser for the Republican party. :D
