annoyed by LTTE's fiLLed with Lies |
|
is there some journaLism etiquette to printing LTTE's? nameLy that they're not fiLLed with Lies (aLthough considring the paper i'm mad at today, the boston heraLd, Lies for bush are ok)?
2 Letters today had 2 bogus Lies that got to me:
1. on john kerry "the words of john o'neiL, a man who served with him ring Loud and cLear.." - j.j. reardon, nantucket.
outright Lie but i can't fauLt him too much - foxnews hasn't bothered to correct this Lie ever.
2. on michaeL moore "Like most of those in LiberaL hoLLywood, moore mainLy concerns himseLf with how much money he can make. it's too bad he and his kind can so easiLy forget those who Lost their Lives on 9/11." - warren grant, cheLmsford.
the Lie by inference if said by anyone with a brain, but again maybe warren onLy watches foxnews who again, have never, ever shied away from the 9/11-iraq Link.
so what is LTTE etiquette? shouLd i write the heraLd to compLain? write my own Letter countering the LTTE's (that wouLd be a sLippery sLope since severaL LTTE's in the papers i read have such garbage in them)?
i normaLLy don't Like to write LTTE's since that's the freeper way.

and often. Pick the letter that you think needs addressed the most then write a polite response with the correct info and supporting data. We do this often. If done correctly you may refer to the original writer by name (at least here we do) and reference his/her LTTE. People interested can then look it up and have both sides. Do write, it helps everyone.

2. I've written the Boston Herald a few times |
|
to correct their lies.
Funny, none of my letters were ever printed.
That rag is such trash.

It only encourages them. We used to wrap fish in it, but it made the fish smell.

5. My local paper is bad about fact checking letters |
|
but pretty good about printing factual corrections (as to #1, but not #2). Why not write a calm letter simply stating the facts, providing an authoritative source, and asking for a correction?
It's always a joy to see an editor's note that begins with: "John Moron's letter of 07/06/04 contained an error..."

i've never, ever seen a correction for a LTTE in any paper. LTTE's have wrong facts or disinformation aLL the time, yet the papers run them anyway.

It took a little doing. They started by refuting facts that supported a point of view opposite their editorial view. Once they started however, they couldn't really be selective.
If the paper won't make a correction on their own, a LTTE that points out the factual error AND calls on the paper to start printing corrections when errors are brought to their attention may put some pressure on.
