It WAS a Psy-op!
Posted this in LBN and was told it wasn't, not sure if THIS is the right place, either! I had always suspected this and read some Conspiracy Theories on it, but to have it confirmed shores up EXACTLY what this Administration is about...trickery and deceit...falsehoods and illusions.

I have a KILLER pic of this, if anyone is interested.

When Saddam Fell: How the Press was Misled From Day One

They were the shots seen 'round the world: newspaper photographs and TV images of jubilant Iraqis toppling a giant statue of Saddam Hussein in Baghdad on April 9, 2003, shortly after the U.S. military chased him out of town. Now, after months of rumors, the U.S. military has confirmed that the entire stunt was conceived by the U.S. military and enacted with the help of a fast-thinking Army psychological operation (PSYOP).

A U.S. Army internal study of the war reveals, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times, that as the Iraqi regime was collapsing that day, U.S. Marines converged on Firdos Square in central Baghdad. It was a Marine colonel who decided to topple the statue, the Army report said, with the PSYOP team making it appear to be a spontaneous Iraqi action.

First, the colonel, who was not named in the report, selected the statue as a "target of opportunity." Then the PSYOP team used loudspeakers to encourage Iraqi civilians, many of them young people, to assemble and assist.

But Marines had already draped an American flag over the statue's face. "God bless them, but we were thinking from PSYOP school that this was just bad news," the PSYOP member wrote in the report. "We didn't want to look like an occupation force." A PSYOP sergeant quickly replaced the American flag with an Iraqi flag.

"Ultimately," the Los Angeles Times report concluded, "a Marine recovery vehicle toppled the statue with a chain, but the effort appeared to be Iraqi-inspired because the PSYOP team had managed to pack the vehicle with cheering Iraqi children."

Photos of the toppling appeared on front pages all over the world with captions that attributed the idea to a happy Iraqi mob.

You're obviously very excited to have discovered this, but the subject of the organized statue toppling has been discussed to death on these boards. Perhaps someone could dig up some links for you.

On edit: here's a good recent link. Have fun.

one of those souls who feel that we should ALL be as informed as you seem to think yourself and if we are not fall into "the masses are asses' category. See, I'm the type of person who believes that information is ALWAYS worth sharing and feel that those who are already "in the know" should feel an obligation to enlighten and teach those who are not, rather than pass judgement and make derisive comments. That being said, what other Psy-ops are you aware of in this "war"?

On edit: Thank you for the link.

On further edit: having a rough morning, please ignore the above rant, sorry.

23. Understandable rant.
It's rough here, and many enjoy putdowns rather than encouragement.

Thanks for your efforts...... many of us will appreciate it.

15. i am also looking for CREDIBLE sources
on the whole Sadaam is NOT Saddam angle. I have seen VERY little on this. As a matter of act, the only things I have found come from the same guy that provided the photo (joevialls.co.uk). The jury is still out on whether or not this guy is a member of "The Tin Hat Brigade" (as many believe ME to be, sometimes with just cause!lol), but it is a VERY intriguing little theory.

Any reputable sources on this?

11. This was discussed in "Control Room"
If you haven't seen this excellent documentary, I highly recommend it. An Iraqi working for Al Jazeera said that there was not a single Iraqi accent in the group accompanying the US soldiers to topple the statue.

17. Of COURSE it was a PSYOP
So transparent I thought Stalin had ordered it.

I have already seen this article in Editor and Publisher.

Just routine confirmation of Obvious Imperial Moral Bankruptcy.

Yawn.

We get one of those at least once a week.

18. Man, how I hate it
when otherwise sane people give a "yawn" to stuff like this. Granted it IS par for the course, but I find apathy to be the greatest force in Bush's corner. What other Ops are you aware of?

20. One you might enjoy...
When Saddam was captured there was considerable evidence that the Kurds captured him, drugged him, and left him in the spider hole for U.S. troops. There was also speculation that he was not supposed to have been captured alive but that the Kurds made sure there were cameras on hand, forcing a live capture.

I'm at work--really don't have time to dig up the links. Can some helpful person do it for me?

19. Obvious from foreign news coverage
The U.S. media showed only close-in photos, which made it look as if the square was packed with people. The Canadian and British media showed the long view, which is like what you posted.

It's horrible that we're now in the same position as people in the old Soviet bloc, needing to rely on foreign news sources to find out what our own country is up to.

24. You got to have friends
And I am all alone.
There is no one here beside me.
And my problems have all gone.
There is no one to deride me.

But you got to have friends.
The feeling's oh so strong.
You got to have friends
to make that day last long.

I had some firends but they're gone,
somethin' came and took them away.
And from the dusk 'til the dawn
here is where I'll stay.

Standing at the end of the road, boys,
waiting for my new friends to come.
I don't care if I'm hungry or poor,
I'm gonna get me some of them.

'Cause you got to have friends.
Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, friends.
That's right you, oh you, yeah you,
I said you gotta have some friends,
I'm talkin' about friends, that's right, friends.
Friends, friends, friends.

I had some firends, oh, but they're all gone, gone,
someone came and snatched them away.
And from the dusk until the very dawn, you know,
here is where I gotta stay, here is where I gotta stay.

And I'm standing at the end of a real long road
and I'm waiting for my new friends to come.
I don't care if I'm hungry or freezin' cold,
I'm gonna get me some of them.

'Cause you gotta have friends,
that's right, friends, friends.
I gotta me my, I gotta me my, I gotta me my,
look around and see all of my friends.
Oh, friends, that's right, friends, friends,
friends, friends, friends, friends, oh,
friends, you gotta have friends . . .
