I'm a social democrat, in the current context. Or democratic socialist, depending on my mood.

As a Canadian, I don't get too het up about "liberty", just like I don't get too het up about electricity and clean water and the right to vote, and generally can't imagine why USAmericans do. Those things are givens. I mean, yeah, okay, this half-decade ya got a problem. Patriot Act, yes, the war on terrorism. (Worth considering the causes of the problems, always.) But in general, I just can't figure out why you folks think that the battles of the 18th century are still being fought.

The rest of us out here really are more concerned with what's called "human security" these days. Things like decent housing, jobs, access to education, medical care, non-discrimination -- "freedom from fear, freedom from want", in the words of one of your wise dead presidents. The things that some of us have to pay, or sacrifice a tiny bit of that liberty, so that others of us can have. We do that gladly.

And it just always strikes me that a bit of a focus shift, of a wider view, might be beneficial for you guys in this respect.
