DETROIT — General Motors (GM) and Ford Motor (F) are boosting incentives to spark demand and clear out excess inventories after U.S. car and truck sales tanked in June.

GM, whose sales declined 12% last month, is dangling cash rebates of up to $5,000 on most remaining 2004 models and as much as $2,000 on some 2005 models.

Ford is also enhancing deals — including interest-free loans for 60 months — after reporting an 8% drop in sales last month. "Reports of the demise of zero-percent financing are greatly exaggerated," Ford spokesman Jim Cain said.

1. the link didn't work for me but
I think it's that no one wants to buy these land-yachts they keep rolling out. The writing is on the wall for high gas and I think people are starting to see this. Now if we can just convince these blockhead GM managers to get out of 1971 as soon as possible and start making cars of the future...........

2. It's that, plus general malaise
Auto sales across the board slumped over the last two months. I know our dealerships throughout RI are bursting with inventory, they have no place to park all of the cars and trucks they've got on hand.

Good to hear the economy is surging ahead, eh?
