Missing Marine says he's safe, Update
Edited on Wed Jul-07-04 05:57 PM by cal04
Marine Cpl. Wassef Hassoun called his family Wednesday to tell them he is safe and in Lebanon, a source close to his family told CNN.

The source said Hassoun contacted the family in West Jordan, Utah, and Lebanon and told them that he had called the U.S. Embassy in Beirut and asked that he be picked up from an undisclosed location in Lebanon. The source said Hassoun sounded healthy and happy.

The source said the family was awaiting word from the embassy in Beirut to find out if it had custody of Hassoun.

The brother of a Marine corporal captured in Iraq is denying new reports that the serviceman has been released and has contacted family members.

``I hope we hear from him, but so far, nothing,'' Mohamad Hassoun told The Associated Press.

CNN reported Wednesday that Wassef Ali Hassoun had been in touch with his family in Utah and Lebanon, telling them he had contacted the U.S. Embassy in Beirut and asked to be picked up at an undisclosed location in Lebanon.

2. Um--isn't he a deserter?
I guess it depends on whether he was kidnapped, tried to hook up with natives who promised to smuggle him out of the country, or wandered off his U.S. military base and had been captured. Not that being a deserter is anything to worry about...
