Why is Bush "declining" to speak at the NAACP meeting........?
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040...

PHILADELPHIA - President Bush (news - web sites) declined an invitation to speak at the NAACP's annual convention, the group said.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (news - web sites) expects more than 8,000 people to attend the convention opening Saturday.

Democratic challenger John Kerry (news - web sites) accepted an invitation to speak next Thursday on the final day of the convention, the NAACP said.

Bush spoke at the 2000 NAACP convention in Baltimore when he was a candidate. But he has declined invitations to speak in each year of his presidency, the first president since Herbert Hoover not to attend an NAACP convention, John White, a spokesman for the group, said Wednesday.

3. Black Republicans will tell you. . .
. . .that given the whole James Byrd ad thing in 2000 the NAACP "has a lot of nerve getting upset that Bush won't speak to them." I am serious. . .they feel that it is justified given the partisan stance they took in 2000. Stupid, sad, but true.

33. Their leader is
a former Democratic congressperson, and they ran ads against him last time even though they're supposed to be non-partisan.

What's in it for him to speak there, just so they can badmouth him after he speaks. Then the stories are "NAACP delegates/leaders unimpressed by president's message."

There's nothing in it for him.

Better for him to speak at an African-American conservative dinner, or church convention, or some more friendly crowd.

4. Calculated move....
Bush has already lost the Black vote anyway. This is a way to signal to white racists that he is sympathetic. Kind of like RR's campaign kickoff back in 80.

12. Tents.
Well, since they're spending so much money on campaign ads, they've had to get smaller tents. Actually, what they're using now are individual, one-man, white, pointy tents that can be worn from location to location.

52. Yes, that's exactly it. . .
I often hear people on this board wonder why so many poor whites will vote Republican every time. The number one reason is race. . . being a Republican is more respectable than being in the KKK. And a Republican administration will play to this every time. It's their bread and butter. I constantly have to remind some white people that the biggest amount of welfare dollars go to white people. Sure, there are a disproportionate number of people of color on the public dole, but if you look at how it's distributed, most of the people who receive aid from the government are white. Republicans have convinced a large demographic that there are only blacks and hispanics on welfare. This is a huge issue for poor whites, who see so much of their paycheck eaten up by taxes.

11. The economics of campaigning.
Bush knows there's no reason to bother campaigning for the "black vote" because he's just not going to get it. He also knows that if he gets a negative response from the NAACP, especially live and on camera, at the convention, that clip will be splattered all over the news and the internet by the end of the day.

Now that Bush has to worry more about his Southern & Midwestern states, has to spend more time and more money there, has to put in more face time there. . . he is even more under the gun to cut his loses with voting blocks he knows he can't win.

"Some people call you the elite, I call you my base." That's right, George. But your "base" is small enough to fill one dinner hall. So now you've got to bust your ass to keep the "disenfranchised but deeply religious" vote that you've been so sure was in the bag.

I'm saving room for Condi and Colin who would be with him to cover for him. I would guess that all of the rest would boo in their souls.

I THINK that they would not boo out loud but have hands that fail to clap.

.. he has insulated himself against all criticism, through "free speech zones", closing down blocks of entire cities, and refusing to speak at ANYTHING that can NOT be filled with personally chosen cheerleaders. He's a sham, and he knows it... musn't get too close to the man.. you'd see all the strings coming from his extremeties, and Cheney up there on the catwalk.
