*************Information for Convention goers*********************** |

About 8 years ago Toronto's Fire Chief gave an interview about safety procedures he follows while travelling and I want to pass them along.
1) When you arrive at your hotel deposit your bags in your room then identify the nearest Fire Exit and DO A PRACTICE ESCAPE.
The Chief said this is essential because many stairwells become a maze on the ground level with corridors to be navigated. By completing a practice run you will know what to expect.
(I actually followed this advice and discovered that the exit to the street was not clearly marked and I mistakenly went dowm to the parking level. Even without a fire I experienced a momentary panic. It was horrible to think that if there were a fire how many people might make the same mistake.)
The Chief said he also does a practice escape in convention centers, at malls he makes a mental note of the fire exits. He never gets into a building without knowing how to leave.
2) Carry a small flashlight and cell phone with you at all times.
3) Pack a large roll of duct tape. If you are unable to leave a building, you can duct tape doors and vents to prevent smoke entering the room. The Chief said he never travels without duct tape.
I hope this is not too alarmist but I think it's excellent advice for all travellers.

1. I was in a hotel fire as a child |
|
We were not near where the fire was, but there was smoke and a huge danger of being crushed in the panic.
I remember my dad holding us up so we weren't smothered by the crush of people going down the stairwells. I don't think my feet touched the floor all the way down.

let me add to this advice... Identify fire escapes, and practise the route, BUT... INFORM the hotel you are doing this! :)
Most fire escape doors are alarmed in many hotels and convention centers and if their security is up to snuff, they WILL investigate when a door is opened. Letting them know in advance is a good way to keep them from overreacting to your activities.
In short... the Anaheim Hilton weas NOT amused when I tried this!
Uhhh...Heh heh... sorry, guys...
