ITs about time you all learn about the print screen button |
|
Since photos and news gets scrubbed someitmes within minutes if you want to share it you hit the print screen button on the upper right of your keyboard.
Save to disk and name or if you have any graphic programs and websites save it to your pictures.
Twice today transcripts and pictures were unable to be recovered due to scrubbing.
Orwellian tactics are leaving us only seconds to save the facts.

Printscreen is fine if you want to take a picture of what's on your screen.
But saving the webpage is more useful if you want to show it to others.

4. In Internet explorer... |
|
it is much more convieniant to save the webpage in the formant ".mht" which can be selected from the drop down menu in the "save as" dialog. This will save the whole webpage as a single file, rather than save all the pictures, icons, etc seperately... Much more convienant to deal with a single file...

9. Hey. thanks. that was a really good idea |
|
I've been around computers, done programming, etc. but somehow that one passed me by until now.
I knew when I tried to save as standard htm file it always created a subdirectory with images, javascripts, etc.
Thx

6. SAVING THE WEB PAGE IS BOGUS |
|
The site changes the content or eliminates it completely.
THAT IS WHY I suggest practicing with the print screen.

11. If you have Adobe Acrobat (full version) you can "print" the page |
|
in ".pdf" format which saves it to disk. You can than actually print it if you want.
The nice thing about this is that you save the actual page, which may be longer than what fits on one screen AND you can attach it to email and mail it to a friend.
For a long time I saved in ".mht" format but it still tries to resolve links when you bring it up later. Also, you can't email it to anyone as an attachment.

A web archive contains all the html and graphics. All nicely timestamped, too.

10. Yes if you save for offline |
|
but most people just save to their lists of favorites.
One must check the save offline box

16. If you are talking about posting images. |
|
The image has to be on a web site somewhere, then if you put the url of the image in your post on DU the image will show up automatically once the post has been submitted. To get the URL of an image put the mouse cursor on it and right click and select properties. That will show the URL of the image and from there you can then copy and paste the URL into your DU post. However some web sites will block their images from being viewed directly like this, but many of them don't. You can check by doing a preview before you submit your post to see if the image shows up or if you just get the little box with the red X in it.
If the image doesn't show up, or you're worried that it might get taken down from the originating web site before everyone has had a chance to see it then your other alternative is to save the image to your hard drive and then put it up on a web site somewhere where you can link to it from your DU post. Of course copyright rules apply in all this. If you took a print screen of a web page and saved it as a gif file for example, you would have to follow the procedures above to post an image of it at DU (assuming it was no longer available at the original web site where it was originally posted).
There was a site that would host images for free that I used to use. But it hasn't been working for a while, so I suspect they're out of business, but I believe there might be some others.

20. Thanks - I guess I tried that website you refer to because |
|
it doesn't work and I thought it was me. (A fellow DUer had provided the link, but I couldn't get the photos to upload to the site.) Appreciate the info and assistance.

17. to post what you have saved, it must be uploaded to a website |
|
You can't post directly from your computer. It must be uploaded to a website. If you want to practice creating websites and uploading files I would recommend Yahoo's Geocities. Free and user-friendly.

When you see something you want to save you hit the button marked "Print Screen" - top right on your keyboard. You have just taken a picture of your screen. You have taken a "screenshot."
THEN you have to PASTE the picture to another program. You can paste into Word or Outlook or just about anything else. Then Save and use as you wish.

21. In OSX hit select all/copy then paste in TextEdit. |
|
The Links will work.
If that isn't important but you want to save the page, then hit print, then click on the PDF button in the print dialog. It will present "Save as PDF." Click that and it will make the page a PDF. You can make PDF's from any document, not just web pages.
