Illinois GOP scrambles to replace Ryan
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040709/ap_on_el_se/illinois_senate_4

"That has some party leaders hoping they can change Rauschenberger's mind and others dreaming of someone entirely different — former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka.

"Mike Ditka would be a great candidate because he represents the average Illinoisan. He's just a decent, ordinary guy that worked hard and wasn't handed anything but made it successful," said state Sen. Dave Syverson.

Rauschenberger praised Ditka as a possible candidate, although no one seemed to know whether the onetime football player was interested. Messages left for Ditka through his restaurant were not immediately returned."

4. Ditka has baggage...
I'm not certain that he wants to have his private life looked at all that closely...

6. I don't think the Republicans could win even if they dug up
Abraham Lincoln and reanimated him. Not that Honest Abe would have anything to do with the Bush* Republican Party.

13. There's still a long way to go.
It's not like we have Jim Riggleman managing anymore. Dusty knows what to do. Just keep the faith for a while.

10. This Is A Great Sit-Com...
Yes, this Illinois DU'er is enjoying a new version of The Twilight Zone...aka the Illinois GOOP.

Ditka? Who else do they have or can turn to? I don't even think Rauschenberger wants to get into this train wreck-to-be and be part of the scape-goating that will amuse us after the elections.

Nah, Abe wouldn't go anywhere near this party, nor would Teddy Roosevelt. Now, maybe we could dig up Ed Vrydolyak or Betty Loren-Maltese. Those are Repugs we could all love

11. we also have a repub house member....
who is suspected of being an active CIA agent. So much for checks and balances. We downstate Democrats have been a lonely species for along time, I think our time has finally come.

12. Who?
I just heard about Ditka on da news up here in Chicagoland. They really are desparate!

I grew up in downstate...Charleston (Coles County) so I know very much what you're talking about with being lonely. Dad and Mom are diehard Republicans. :(
