Voting official seeks process for canceling Election Day over terrorism
Edited on Fri Jul-09-04 07:25 AM by acmavm
NOTE: From June 25th. The point of this post is that I'm asking if there have been any updates or does anyone know of any further discussion on this issue.

WASHINGTON -- The government needs to establish guidelines for canceling or rescheduling elections if terrorists strike the United States again, says the chairman of a new federal voting commission.

Such guidelines do not currently exist, said DeForest B. Soaries, head of the voting panel.

Soaries was appointed to the federal Election Assistance Commission last year by President Bush. Soaries said he wrote to National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice and Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge in April to raise the concerns.

Soaries said his bipartisan, four-member commission might make a recommendation to Congress about setting up guidelies.

"I'm hopeful that there are some proposals already being floated. If there are, we're not aware of them. If there are not, we will probably try to put one on the table," he said.

**********************************************************************I know this is old news, but I didn't see any discussion on here about this guys remarks. And I seriously think we need to know if they've 'put anything on the table' as this jackoff phrased it. We have held elections through the Civil War, two World Wars, the unrest of the 60s and 70s. Why the hell would we give up the most fundamental right, the right that makes up 'America' out of fear? Any attack would reflect on the incompetency of this administration and would make it an absolute necessity to hold an election.

On a side note: How about those TANG records? Is this the kind of walking criminal freak show that America needs during times like this?

1. Their plans are plain as day
if it looks like they will lose the election. What puzzles and angers me is the complete lack of outrage over this shit, nothing but the sound of crickets outside of this forum. WTF!

2. haha...
We are less than four months until the election and they are just now trying to find a plan?

Oh, the headaches this will cause, especially if a recount should happen. Mixed ballots between two elections, I can just imagine the possibilites to corrupt our system.

3. If they do this, the whole deal's off!
I'd start pressuring my governor to quit this godforsaken country and hitch Wisconsin up with Canada.

5. Here's the process: you don't get to do it.
End of story.

Realistically, the 9/11 attacks only shut down operations in two cities (NYC and Washington). If that happened on election day everywhere else would get to vote and the areas affected could be up in running in two days, tops.

6. October Surprise: Suspended Elections.
We may not have an actual terrorist attack (that would look bad for the Bushies, after all), but I'm sure Bushco will find ample evidence that terrorists are planning a massive attack, or they will 'thwart' an attack, and therefore the election must be suspended indefinitely--for the safety of the American people.

I've learned that the Bush administration almost always has a sinister reason for doing what they do (ex: trying to exempt our soldiers from being prosecuted for international war crimes in 2002).
